Zambia's Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance in Turmoil: Leaders Incarcerated Amid Political Firestorm

Deepening signs of fracture are becoming evident within the Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance as its national chairperson, Davies Mwila of the BM8-ECL Movement, announced the suspension of Chris Zumani Zimba from his role as Tonse Alliance secretary general. This development unfolds amidst the high-profile detention of the alliance’s top leadership at Mukobeko Maximum Correctional Facility. Mr. Mwila made this announcement following a high-stakes solidarity visit to the prison in Kabwe, attempting to project an image of strength while inadvertently exposing an alliance under severe stress.

Mr. Mwila confirmed that the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) 2026 presidential candidate, Brian Mundubile, along with his running mate Makebi Zulu, remain detained in stable condition. The duo, accompanied by 16 other opposition figures, was transferred to the maximum-security facility under heavy armed guard to face grave charges of treason, linked to allegations of forming an illegal militia. Despite their physical confinement, Mr. Mwila asserted, “They are in good health and their spirits remain strong despite this political persecution.” He also vehemently rejected claims of an internal leadership vacuum, insisting that Mr. Mundubile remained the undisputed leader of the alliance.

Compounding the crisis behind bars, a bitter internal civil war is escalating outside the prison walls. Mr. Mwila announced the immediate suspension of Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance secretary general, Mr. Zimba. According to official alliance communications, Mr. Zimba was suspended under Article 13(6) of the Tonse-Pamodzi Constitution. The stated reason for his suspension was a wave of unauthorised Press statements and social media postings issued in his name. Insiders revealed that the alliance leadership grew weary of Mr. Zimba issuing alarming declarations without consulting the wider leadership.

The Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance expressed considerable alarm over the direction and frequency of remarks made by Mr. Zimba. Pamodzi media director Brian Matambo specifically noted statements attributed to Zimba in the Daily Mail, which suggested that Tonse leader Brian Mundubile should recognize President Hakainde Hichilema and pave the way for dialogue. Pamodzi, being in partnership with Tonse, found these public pronouncements particularly alarming given that senior opposition leaders remain incarcerated and Zambia continues to grapple with unresolved questions arising from the August 2026 elections, emphasizing the need for consultation and discipline on matters touching on the political direction of the opposition.

Further distancing the alliance from Mr. Zimba’s controversial statements, Tonse Alliance member and Economic Freedom Fighters president Kasonde Mwenda stated that the public should not regard a statement circulating in Mr. Zimba’s name as a collective position of the Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance. Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba, identified as the founder of the Tonse Alliance, was quoted by the Zambia Daily Mail as saying President Hakainde Hichilema won the just-ended elections and called on Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu to recognize President Hichilema as Head of State, arguing it could ease the path towards dialogue. However, a separate statement believed to have been issued by the Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance media team has also rejected Dr. Zimba’s position. Kasonde Mwenda, a member of the Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance Council of Presidents, confirmed that the council has not collectively endorsed the positions attributed to Dr. Zimba nor that of the media team, as reported on September 9, 2026.
