Wilson Bethel Unlocks Bullseye's Most Unhinged 'Daredevil' Episode

In "Daredevil: Born Again" Season 2, Episode 4, titled "Gloves Off," Wilson Bethel portrays a chillingly precise Bullseye (Dex) who, despite his actions, sees himself as a hero on a "righteous mission to redeem himself." According to Bethel in an interview with Collider, this season's Bullseye possesses a "lightness about him" and an "almost like a joy" because he genuinely believes he is balancing the scales, particularly after the attempted murder of the Fisks. This conviction is central to understanding his character's twisted sense of righteousness.
The episode's iconic diner massacre scene exemplifies Bullseye "just living his best life." The sequence begins by showing Dex's seemingly ordinary routines before escalating into outright carnage. He lures the Anti-Vigilante Task Force into a trap at the diner under the guise of The Punisher, eliminates the officers he perceives as threats, and then calmly reassures civilians that he is "one of the good guys." This intricate action sequence, which involved 80 separate shots, was remarkably filmed in just one day, a feat Bethel considers one of the greatest he's been a part of.
Bullseye's complex and messy history with Wilson Fisk and Vanessa fuels much of the tension, especially during the climax involving Vanessa. Bethel explains that Bullseye has "a lot of reasons to hate them individually and collectively," drawing upon the character's rich backstory from previous seasons to inform his performance. This season, there's a conscious shift to make Bullseye "less chaotic and more precise," embodying a "colder" and more controlled weapon, reflecting his perceived "righteous mission."
A poignant moment occurs when Bullseye tells Matt Murdock he wants to do "one good thing." Bethel asserts that this sentiment is 100% sincere, stemming from a "wounded child" element within Dex. He likens it to a simplistic, childlike mentality of seeking forgiveness through a single good act, regardless of past transgressions. Bethel also expresses his enjoyment of working with Charlie Cox, highlighting their "extra-special something" on screen and the thoughtful, complex conversations about morality in Episode 5.
The physicality of Bullseye this season is also distinct, with Bethel describing it as that of an "apex predator." He embodies the character with the confidence of a lion in its savannah, aware of his lethal skill set. This gives Bullseye a palpable "swagger" and "menacing aura" that Bethel finds enjoyable to portray and believes translates effectively on screen.
