Obi-Sheriff War of Words: Patriotism Questioned Amidst Calls for Tinubu's Resignation

Former Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, has launched a strong critique against Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), asserting that Obi lacks the moral authority to demand the resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today, Sheriff accused Obi, a former Anambra State governor, of pursuing an agenda that could undermine Nigeria’s unity. He insisted that any individual perceived to be sympathetic to separatist movements cannot credibly call for the resignation of a democratically elected president. Sheriff alleged that Obi had failed to clearly dissociate himself from pro-Biafra agitation, leading to questions about his commitment to the nation's unity. He declared Obi as "the most unqualified person" to ask Tinubu to resign, emphasizing that Nigeria's presidency requires absolute loyalty to the country’s unity and territorial integrity. Sheriff further argued that the sacrifices made by Nigerians during the civil war to maintain national cohesion should not be trivialized by politicians he accused of promoting divisive sentiments. He publicly challenged Obi to declare that he does not support the breakup of Nigeria, stating such a declaration would resolve doubts about his political stance. Sheriff maintained that Nigeria has progressed beyond the civil war era and must remain united despite its diverse political and ethnic landscapes. In response, the Obidient Movement faulted Ali Modu Sheriff’s comments, stating that the former governor lacked the moral authority to question Peter Obi’s patriotism. In a statement from its Media and Communications Directorate, the movement accused Sheriff of sidestepping discussions on the performance of President Bola Tinubu’s administration during his recent television appearance. The group argued that instead of addressing critical national concerns such as insecurity and the economy, Sheriff diverted attention to historical issues related to the Nigerian Civil War and Peter Obi. The Obidient Movement characterized these comments as a deliberate tactic to distract public attention from current governance challenges, emphasizing that national discourse should focus on pressing issues like insecurity, economic hardship, inflation, and the rising cost of living. The movement affirmed that Obi has consistently demonstrated his commitment to national unity and inclusive development through his actions and investments across regional, ethnic, and religious boundaries. It cited Obi's support for businesses in various parts of the country, including Umza Rice during his tenure as chairman of Fidelity Bank, as proof of his belief in a united Nigeria. Furthermore, the statement highlighted Obi’s articulated plans to leverage the agricultural potential of northern Nigeria to foster economic growth, create jobs, and diversify the nation’s revenue base. The Obidient Movement dismissed claims questioning Obi’s commitment to Nigeria’s unity, noting his consistent advocacy for dialogue, justice, and inclusion as crucial pathways to addressing insecurity and national grievances. The group also criticized Sheriff’s political record, questioning his standing to challenge Obi’s patriotism or commitment to national development.
