Orlando Pirates has announced the departure of Deano van Rooyen by mutual consent, marking one of 13 player movements from the club since June. This significant squad clear-out has also seen the arrival of nine new players as the Buccaneers actively reshape their team for the upcoming season.
Orlando Pirates Football Club has been notably active in the transfer market, orchestrating a significant clear-out of its squad while simultaneously bringing in new talent. The latest player to depart from the Mayfair-based club is Deano van Rooyen, whose exit by mutual consent on Friday brings the total number of player movements out of the Buccaneers since June to 13. The decision regarding Van Rooyen's future followed open discussions between the player and the club, with both parties agreeing that the time was right for him to embark on a new chapter in his career.
Deano van Rooyen, a right-back, originally joined Orlando Pirates from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2024/25 season. During his tenure, he established himself as a consistent full-back in the Betway Premiership, making more than 51 appearances for the club. Despite not always being guaranteed a starting place, the 27-year-old maintained a professional approach and remained a dependable option whenever called upon by the technical team. His departure concludes a chapter that began with high expectations, given his reputation for consistency and reliability at his former club. Orlando Pirates has expressed its appreciation for his contributions during his time with the club.
The club's most substantial clear-out occurred in July, when the Sea Robbers sanctioned the permanent departures of seven players to various clubs across the Premier Soccer League pyramid. These movements included Thabiso Sesane and Selaelo Rasebotja joining Siwelele FC, while Siyabonga Ndlozi and Gomolemo Khoto transferred to Sekhukhune United. Sonwabo Khumalo and Blessing Ngiba completed moves to Midlands Wanderers FC, and Seth Green joined Durban City FC, all part of the Buccaneers' strategy to trim their squad. These departures followed several senior player exits at the end of the previous campaign, with Bandile Shandu leaving for Durban City FC after his contract expired, and Tshegofatso Mabasa, Sipho Mbule, Karim Kimvuidi, and Deivi Miguel Vieira (Gilberto) also concluding their spells with the club.
In parallel with these numerous departures, Orlando Pirates has been equally proactive in strengthening its squad, securing the services of nine new players. Among these arrivals is Thapelo Mokobodi, who joined on a three-year contract from Stellenbosch FC. Other significant new additions to the Buccaneers' roster include Sebastian Pedersen, Neo Rapoo, Sbangani Zulu, Bohlale Ngwato, Matome Mmolai, Gamphani Lungu, and Mthetheleli Mthiyane. Additionally, Aphiwe Baliti joined from Siwelele FC but has been immediately loaned back to his former club for the remainder of the season, highlighting the Buccaneers' comprehensive approach to managing their player resources.
