US State Department to Unleash 'Freedom Tech Program' with Bitcoin and Palantir, Shaking Up Global Digital Diplomacy

The U.S. State Department is initiating a new program, the Freedom Tech Excellence Program (FTEP), aimed at advancing digital freedom globally. This initiative involves collaboration with several key organizations: the Bitcoin Policy Institute, data-analytics firm Palantir Technologies, defense technology company Anduril Industries, and the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation. The program will tackle critical issues such as online surveillance, encryption, artificial intelligence governance, and the protection of free expression online.

The FTEP has outlined five priority areas to guide its participants. These include safeguarding First Amendment and free expression rights in the digital era, actively countering unlawful digital surveillance and various online scams, and promoting privacy-enhancing technologies like robust encryption and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Additionally, the program will focus on the responsible governance of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, and ensuring the safety of children and all other users online.

A notable aspect of the FTEP is the inclusion of the Bitcoin Policy Institute. This participation underscores the State Department's view of Bitcoin and broader blockchain technology as crucial tools for circumventing censorship and financial surveillance, especially within authoritarian regimes. This perspective aligns with the Bitcoin Policy Institute's long-standing advocacy work. The program structure will involve limited-term assignments, where private sector personnel will be temporarily embedded within the State Department to contribute to shaping diplomatic efforts concerning specific digital freedom challenges.
