Ukraine Suffers New Russian Drone Attacks: Ten Dead as Conflict Intensifies

The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently visited Baku, Azerbaijan, where he signed crucial agreements on security and energy cooperation with his counterpart Ilham Aliyev. Kyiv aims to utilize its extensive experience in defending its airspace against Russian aggression, particularly in the context of broader regional security. Zelenskyy highlighted an agreement focused on military-industrial cooperation, a sentiment echoed by Aliyev, who noted the "wide-ranging perspectives" for joint defense production between the two nations. This diplomatic push also involved discussions about potential peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in Azerbaijan, with Zelenskyy expressing readiness for such a meeting if Russia commits to diplomacy. This initiative comes as Kyiv seeks to strengthen its alliances and leverage its expertise, especially after recent conflicts in the Middle East saw other nations seeking Ukraine's assistance against long-range drones, following US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran in late February.

The visit coincided with a major escalation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as Russia launched a massive wave of drone and missile attacks across Ukraine over the weekend. The southeastern city of Dnipro was particularly hard-hit, enduring three separate waves of assaults over "more than 20 frightening hours," as described by Regional Governor Oleksandr Hanzha. These deliberate attacks, targeting residential areas with missiles and drones, resulted in eight fatalities and 49 injuries in Dnipro alone. A large section of an apartment block collapsed after being struck, with rescuers subsequently targeted during their operations, leading to further casualties. In northern Ukraine, the Chernihiv region also suffered, with two people killed and seven wounded. Overall, at least 10 people were killed and more than 30 injured across the affected regions. Ukraine's air force reported downing an impressive 580 out of 619 drones and 30 out of 47 missiles launched by Russian forces, underscoring the intensity of the attacks and the crucial role of air defenses. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko condemned Russia's actions, stating, "Russia is deliberately prolonging its terror against our people, continuing to target critical infrastructure and residential buildings," while President Zelenskyy reiterated the urgent need for partners to provide "immediate and firm action, rapid strengthening of our air defenses."

Amidst the Russian offensive, Ukraine also intensified its drone attacks on Russian territory and Russian-occupied regions. A Ukrainian drone attack on Sevastopol in Russian-annexed Crimea tragically killed one man and wounded three others, with the Moscow-installed governor reporting 43 UAVs were shot down. Further attacks included a Ukrainian drone striking an apartment building in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, causing minor injuries, and another attack in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian region of Luhansk, which killed three residents of a village.

The conflict's ripple effects extended to neighboring NATO member Romania, where a drone crashed in a populated area after Russian strikes in nearby Ukraine. While no casualties were reported, an electricity pole and an outbuilding were damaged, and gas supplies were cut as a precautionary measure. This marked the first time debris from Russian drones caused material damage on Romanian territory, prompting the scrambling of two British RAF Typhoon fighter jets from a base in Romania after radar tracked drones near their airspace. Meanwhile, Russia continued to solidify its alliances, with Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of Russia's Duma and a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, visiting North Korea. His visit was to commemorate Pyongyang’s estimated deployment of 14,000 troops to aid Moscow in the Ukraine conflict, with over 6,000 reportedly killed, according to South Korean, Ukrainian, and Western officials. This demonstrates the widening geopolitical implications and the complex web of alliances and conflicts surrounding the ongoing war.
