The Tooro Kingdom is currently engulfed in a profound succession dispute following the death of King Oyo, who passed away on August 27, 2026, at the age of 34, due to cancer. This contentious standoff threatens to disrupt the final funeral rites for the late monarch, with his burial scheduled for September 12. President Museveni has reportedly intervened, seeking to unite the rival factions and prevent further instability within the kingdom.
At the core of the dispute are two competing claims to the throne. On one side, the Babiito clan elders have formally selected former journalist Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the next Omukama. However, this choice has been met with strong opposition from members of the royal family, who are citing King Oyo’s reported 2022 will. This will is said to name his biological son as the primary heir, with Prince Komwiswa Yoweri listed as an alternative successor should the young prince be unable to assume the throne.
The schism within the royal family has intensified, particularly after Princesses Komuntale and Bagaaya publicly rejected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new king.
