A young designer can spend three days working on a presentation, only to discover that an AI tool can produce five different versions of it before lunch.

A student who has never written code can describe the website she wants and have the first version generated for her. A writer staring at a blank page can feed an AI tool a rough idea and get an introduction, possible headlines and an outline within minutes.

For a long time, being able to do these things well gave people an advantage. You learned how to write. You practised design. You studied programming. You became good at research. Years of practice turned a skill into something you could offer the world.

Now, the machine can help with the skill too.

And that should create a new question other than whether AI will take people's jobs.

If machines can become good at many of the things we spent years learning, what exactly are humans supposed to be good at?

What Happens When Being Good At Something Is No Longer Rare?

Imagine two people applying for the same writing job.

One has spent five years learning how to write. She knows how to structure an argument, interview someone properly, spot a weak sentence, and turn a complicated idea into something people actually want to read.

The other person has never worked as a writer, but knows how to use AI very well.

Give both of them a blank page and a deadline, and the difference may no longer be as obvious as it once was.

The second person can generate ideas, create an outline, rewrite awkward sections and produce a decent first draft in a fraction of the time. The experienced writer still has an advantage, especially when the story requires judgement, original thinking or a deep understanding of the audience. But the cost of producing an acceptable piece of work has fallen.

That is one of the biggest changes AI is bringing to work.

It is making average competence cheaper.

This matters because the things that are easy to produce usually become less valuable.

Photography changed when everyone got a decent camera in their pocket. Knowing how to take a technically clear photograph was no longer enough to make someone remarkable.

Social media then gave almost everyone a publishing platform, and suddenly being able to create content was no longer a particularly unusual skill either.

AI is pushing this further.

It can help people write, design, code, research, analyse information and create presentations without requiring them to spend years becoming experts first.

So the question may eventually become less about whether you can produce something and more about whether you know what is worth producing.

If Everyone Can Create, Who Decides What is Actually Good?

Picture a business owner who needs a flyer for a new product.

Ten years ago, she might have called a graphic designer, explained what she wanted and waited for the work to be done.

Today, she can open an AI tool, describe the product and generate several designs herself.

But now she has another problem.

Which one is actually good?

One design might look attractive but communicate the wrong message. Another might have beautiful colours but make the product look cheap. A third might be technically impressive but completely wrong for the people she wants to reach.

The machine has given her options.

It has not necessarily given her judgement.

This is where taste becomes important.

Taste is not simply knowing what you like. It is being able to recognise quality, understand context and notice when something does not quite work. An editor uses it when deciding whether an article deserves to be published.

A filmmaker uses it when deciding which scene to remove. A founder uses it when deciding whether an idea is worth turning into a business.

And sometimes, taste comes from doing something badly for a very long time before learning what good actually looks like.

That is difficult to automate.

If AI can give everyone access to thousands of possibilities, the person who knows which three are worth considering becomes increasingly useful.

A writer may use AI to generate twenty headlines. The valuable skill may be knowing why eighteen of them should never see daylight.

That is a different kind of expertise.

What Does Human Experience Bring To The Table?

There is another thing machines can imitate without actually possessing.

Experience.

An AI can write a convincing paragraph about heartbreak. It can describe grief, ambition, loneliness or falling in love. It can produce a speech about growing up or a story about a child who wants to make their parents proud.

But it has never lived any of those things.

A Nigerian writer describing Lagos traffic knows that traffic is more than cars refusing to move. It can mean arriving late to an interview despite leaving home two hours early, sweating inside a bus, calculating whether to spend ₦2,000 on another ride or risk being even later, and then having to explain to someone who has been sitting comfortably in an office why “I was in traffic” is actually a complete story.

That context changes how we understand the sentence.

Our experiences quietly shape how we see the world. They influence the questions we ask, the problems we notice and the things we consider important.

This is why two people can use the same AI tool and produce completely different results.

The machine has access to an enormous amount of information. The person brings their own history to the conversation.

A 22-year-old who has grown up watching friends struggle to find jobs may ask very different questions about work from someone who has never had to think about unemployment.

A doctor who has spent years treating patients may notice something in an AI-generated health article that a casual user misses.

A teacher who has stood in front of 40 restless teenagers knows that a theoretically perfect lesson plan can fail spectacularly by 10:15 a.m.

Experience gives knowledge somewhere to stand.

So, What are Humans Actually Going To Be Good At?

Maybe the answer is not one particular skill. It is the ability to judge, choose and care.

When AI can produce a hundred images, someone still has to decide which image tells the story.

When it can generate a hundred articles, someone has to decide which idea deserves to enter the public conversation.

When it can produce a hundred business ideas, someone has to decide which problem is important enough to solve.

And when it gives us an answer, someone still has to decide whether that answer is right.

That may be where human value becomes more interesting.

For a long time, we competed by becoming faster, smarter and more skilled at producing things. Now we are building machines that can help almost anyone produce.

So perhaps the next advantage will belong to the person who can look at all those possibilities and recognise the one that is important.

The person who notices the story nobody is telling.

The problem everyone has accepted as normal.

The idea that sounds strange at first but makes sense once you think about it.
