Tragedy Strikes: Niger Boat Mishap Claims 60 Lives, Labour Party Calls for Action

A tragic boat mishap occurred at the Malale riverfront in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State on September 2, 2025, claiming a significant number of lives. The incident involved a boat that departed from Tugan Sule in Shagunu ward, carrying an estimated 90 passengers, later reported by the district head to be more than 100. The vessel was en route to Dugga for a condolence visit when it capsized around 11:30 AM. Investigations into the cause of the disaster pointed to a combination of overloading and a collision with a tree stump.
Initially, Abdullahi Baba Arah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed the incident to Daily Trust, reporting that 29 dead bodies had been recovered, 50 persons rescued alive, and two individuals were still missing. Search and rescue operations were immediately initiated to locate the missing. However, the death toll from this devastating incident continued to rise, with Reuters subsequently quoting Baba Arah as stating that the toll had reached 60. He also mentioned that ten people were found in serious condition, and many more were still being sought in the ongoing search efforts.
Sa’adu Inuwa Muhammad, the district head of Shagumi, visited the scene shortly after the accident, arriving around 12 p.m. and staying until 4 p.m. He confirmed that the boat had carried more than 100 people and personally witnessed the recovery of 31 corpses from the river. The boat itself was also retrieved. Muhammad further disclosed that four victims were buried on Tuesday according to Islamic rites and highlighted the heartbreaking detail that women and children constituted the majority of the deceased, underscoring the profound human cost of the tragedy.
In response to the calamity, the Labour Party (LP) described the boat mishap as “one tragedy too many.” The party’s Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, issued a statement in Abuja, extending condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Niger State. Usman emphasized the alarming frequency of boat mishaps on Nigeria’s inland waterways, particularly in Niger State. She urged authorities to urgently consider and enact more robust legislation and stricter enforcement of safety regulations for water transportation to prevent the recurrence of such devastating incidents and ensure the safety of citizens.
