Zambia Demands Justice: Calls Mount for Independent Probe into Kafwaya's Mysterious Death
The death of former MP Mutotwe Kafwaya, shot during a security operation in Kabulonga, has sparked widespread national grief and debate. Amidst public questioning and social media reactions, The Resolute Party has formally demanded an independent investigation into the circumstances of his fatal shooting.
The nation is engulfed in grief, shock, and debate following the tragic death of former Lunte Member of Parliament and Cabinet minister Mutotwe Kafwaya. Police confirmed Kafwaya was fatally shot during a joint security operation in Kabulonga, Lusaka, last Friday. This confirmation sent waves across social media, where thousands expressed profound sadness and engaged in intense discussions regarding the circumstances of his demise.
Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba officially identified Kafwaya as the previously unnamed individual who died in the operation. According to Musamba, a joint intelligence-led task force arrived at a residence in Kabulonga around 19:30, following intelligence gathered after the earlier recovery of K7.3 million in Lusaka. Police reported encountering gunfire and resistance upon arrival, leading them to return fire. Tragically, one man was shot and subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital, later identified by his family as Mutotwe Kafwaya. The operation also resulted in the apprehension of eleven individuals on alleged charges related to treason, including three former commandos and two retired police officers. Authorities also recovered firearms, ammunition, military equipment, and electronic devices from the premises. Investigations into the group and the circumstances surrounding the operation remain underway.
The incident sparked immediate public outcry and varied reactions online. Many Facebook users recalled opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile's earlier account of the operation, which they felt had been initially dismissed or even mocked. Comments like Charles Chipango's “They thought BM8 was doing comedy when he was giving a statement. Crying for my mother Zambia,” and Sydney Chisoko's observation that people were now mocking reports about Kafwaya's death, reflected a sense of vindication for some who believed Mundubile's narrative was unfolding accurately. Sky Innocent Chanda also echoed this sentiment, believing Mundubile’s narration was gradually being validated as events unfolded, while expressing condolences to Kafwaya’s family.
Amidst the shock, calls for restraint and avoidance of speculation emerged, with individuals like Thelma Mugala urging the public to wait for all facts. Others focused purely on the human tragedy, expressing sorrow over the loss of life, irrespective of political affiliations. Maxwell Simwanza, Paul Chikapa Mukwato, and Cuthbert Curtis Mutakwa conveyed simple messages of sadness, with Mutakwa stating, “Lost life, sad reading no matter what.”
However, significant questions arose concerning the specifics of the operation. Samuel Mubita queried, “What were they doing with ex-commandos with military grade guard equipment?” while Seems N Sikangila suggested, “There is more to this story… the mission was bigger than what an ordinary Zambian can see.” Dumase Katongo shared an African proverb, “The dance of a mad man can only be funny if he is not your relative,” emphasizing how personal impact changes perspective. Lizzie Kanyimbo Chihana reminded fellow citizens that political power is temporary, urging leaders to treat people well because “a life lost can never be replaced.”
Adding to the growing pressure for transparency, The Resolute Party, through its president Dr. Martin Phiri, has vehemently called for an independent and transparent investigation into Kafwaya’s death. Dr. Phiri emphasized that the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting could not simply be overlooked due to its occurrence during a security operation. He extended condolences to the Kafwaya family, describing the late minister as a family man and Zambian citizen who met an unfortunate end. The party argues that an independent probe is crucial to establish precisely how Kafwaya was shot and to instill public confidence in the findings. This demand contributes to widespread calls for authorities to provide a comprehensive account of Mutotwe Kafwaya’s final moments. The online discussion reflected a nation divided between those demanding answers over the operation, those urging caution against speculation, and many others simply mourning the death of the former lawmaker, as investigations into the incident continue.
