Kyiv Under Siege: Russian Strikes Leave Dozens Dead and Injured

Kyiv experienced a devastating overnight Russian missile barrage, resulting in significant casualties and widespread damage across the Ukrainian capital. Local authorities reported at least 12 people killed and 33 injured in the city, with air raid alerts persisting into the early morning hours on Thursday. The strikes impacted 12 different sites within Kyiv's Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Solomianskyi districts, causing destruction to homes, a medical facility, and an educational institution. Emergency services were actively engaged in rescuing individuals trapped under rubble.

In the Solomianskyi district, the upper two floors of a nine-storey residential building were destroyed, and fires erupted on other levels. Additionally, people were found trapped in two other residential buildings and a school shelter. Beyond the city center, Kyiv regional governor Tymur Tkachenko confirmed an attack in the Brovary district on the outskirts of the capital, which claimed one life and injured another. An industrial facility in Brovary was also damaged, with emergency crews working to extinguish a subsequent fire.

The intense attacks prompted immediate security responses from neighboring NATO member states. Poland's military deployed aircraft and activated air defense systems to safeguard its airspace, particularly in areas near the Ukrainian border. Similarly, Romania's Defence Ministry reported radar detection of aerial targets close to the Ukrainian border, leading to the scrambling of two Spanish fighter jets, part of NATO missions, and a Romanian Air Force helicopter.

This escalation in aggression comes as Russia has intensified its ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv, a strategic move aimed at depleting the city's defense stocks. Kyiv's ability to intercept ballistic threats is notably limited, and the supply of missiles for its US-made Patriot defense systems remains constrained. In a retaliatory measure, Ukraine has simultaneously increased its long-range strikes on Russian territory, targeting weapons depots, military facilities, and other strategic objectives to weaken Moscow’s capacity to sustain its assaults on Ukrainian cities. Concurrently, Moscow authorities reported that approximately 250 drones targeted the region overnight, with the majority successfully intercepted at a considerable distance from the Russian capital.
