Tragedy Strikes Nairobi: Two Teachers Dead, Dozens Injured in Horrific Matatu Crash

A tragic road accident on Saturday evening, January 31, 2026, outside Nairobi City Primary School, Ngara, claimed the lives of two teachers and left 26 others injured. The incident occurred when a public service vehicle, described as a matatu or bus, rammed into a group of teachers who were leaving the venue after participating in the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Nairobi branch elections.
KUPPET Secretary-General Akelo Misori confirmed the devastating event, stating that one teacher died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries later while undergoing treatment. The injured teachers were rushed to various hospitals across the city for urgent medical attention. Thirteen teachers were admitted to Aga Khan Hospital in Parklands, with others receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi West Hospital, Scholastica, Radiant, and Mater Hospital.
Emergency response teams acted swiftly, and medical professionals at these facilities spared no effort to save lives, with some teachers undergoing surgical procedures. Officials later confirmed that 13 teachers had been treated and discharged, while the remaining injured were in stable condition, with one teacher who underwent surgery responding well to treatment.
The crash sent shockwaves through the teaching fraternity and the wider community. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, alongside officials from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and KUPPET, visited the injured teachers. CS Ogamba conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and expressed relief at the recovery progress of the injured, while emphasizing the government's commitment to supporting them and the families of the deceased.
KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori described the incident as a painful blow but acknowledged the swift intervention by the government and relevant agencies in easing anxiety among teachers. TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi assured affected families that all medical expenses for the injured teachers are being fully covered under their medical insurance scheme, ensuring no financial burden. He also mentioned that psychosocial support is being provided to those traumatized by the event.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu called for thorough investigations into the Nairobi accident, extending heartfelt condolences to the victims' families. Both the Education CS and union leaders urged motorists and all road users to exercise heightened caution and strictly adhere to traffic rules to prevent similar tragedies, warning against the normalization of road carnage.
This Nairobi tragedy occurred amidst another fatal road accident in Nyeri County, where a van ferrying 25 learners from Mahehe Friends Academy and Aberdare Academy was involved in a crash, resulting in the deaths of one or two pupils and serious injuries to several others. CS Ogamba described these twin tragedies as
