Tom Cruise's Secret Star Wars Cameo: Did You Miss His Lightsaber Duel?

Director Shawn Levy has revealed a fascinating anecdote from the set of his upcoming film, “Star Wars: Starfighter,” disclosing that none other than Hollywood icon Tom Cruise made an unexpected visit in November and even contributed to the movie by filming a lightsaber duel. Levy, who is helming the Ryan Gosling-led “Star Wars” tentpole set to premiere on May 28, 2027, recounted the incident to The New York Times, highlighting Cruise's hands-on involvement.
According to Levy, Cruise arrived on set, initially stating he just wanted to observe. However, as Levy was preparing a scene featuring a lightsaber duel taking place in water, he jokingly suggested that Cruise, clad in his very nice shoes, operate one of the cameras. To Levy's surprise and slight disbelief, Cruise readily accepted the impromptu offer, wading into the muddy pond water up to his ankles. “Tom Cruise was up to his ankles in mud and pond water. He wore a look of great concentration as he stooped over a digital camera, trying to frame the perfect shot,” The Times reported. Levy humorously added, “Last week Steven Spielberg was here. And now Tom Cruise is wielding a camera, ruining his very nice shoes.” This unique collaboration means that a segment of the lightsaber duel featured in the final film will have been shot by Tom Cruise himself, a detail Levy enthusiastically shared, noting, “I mean, how cool is that?”
“Star Wars: Starfighter” is poised to be an original and distinct entry into the beloved galaxy far, far away, intentionally separating itself from the established Skywalker saga. Beyond Ryan Gosling in the lead role, the film boasts a stellar ensemble cast including Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, and Amy Adams. The screenplay was penned by Jonathan Tropper, known for his work as the creator of popular Cinemax series like “Banshee” and “Warrior.”
Levy also shed light on his directorial philosophy, emphasizing a responsible approach to blockbuster filmmaking. In contrast to some who prioritize creative ambition regardless of cost or schedule, Levy prides himself on delivering projects efficiently and respecting studio investments. “I’m the guy the studios call when they want someone they know will take their investment seriously and deliver responsibly,” he stated, underscoring his commitment as a diligent filmmaker.
Shawn Levy's track record speaks for itself. His previous feature directorial effort, Marvel’s “Deadpool and Wolverine,” achieved massive success, grossing $1.3 billion in summer 2024 and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. Given this success, Disney and Lucasfilm are undoubtedly hopeful that Levy can replicate this strong performance for the “Star Wars” franchise. In addition to his film work, Levy serves as an executive producer for the acclaimed series “Stranger Things” and directed several episodes of its final season. “Star Wars: Starfighter” is scheduled to ignite screens worldwide on May 28, 2027.
