US Government Shakes Crypto Market with $500M Transfer
The U.S. government has transferred over half a billion dollars in seized cryptocurrency, primarily from the Bitfinex hack and FTX/Alameda, to Coinbase Prime. While the purpose remains undisclosed, the move aligns with Coinbase Prime's role in providing custody and advanced trading services for federal digital asset holdings.
The United States government has recently executed significant transfers of seized cryptocurrency, moving approximately $565.87 million worth of digital assets to Coinbase Prime within a span of just a few hours. This series of transactions, as reported by blockchain analytics platform Onchain Lens, highlights ongoing government activity in managing confiscated digital funds.
The most recent substantial transfer involved 94.15 million Tether (USDT), which Onchain Lens identified as originating from seized assets linked to the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX and its associated trading arm, Alameda Research. This particular movement followed a series of other transactions that collectively amounted to around $471.7 million, contributing to the overall half-billion-dollar sum.
Delving into the earlier transfers, the initial batch comprised 3,974 Bitcoin (BTC), valued at approximately $329.95 million at the time of the move. This considerable sum was described by the blockchain analytics platform as being connected to the infamous Bitfinex hack. Another notable transaction included 657.92 BTC, worth about $54.55 million; 750.19 Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), valued at roughly $62.34 million; and 24.89 million USDT, equivalent to $24.88 million. According to Onchain Lens, these specific coins were also derived from seized assets associated with FTX and Alameda Research. Interestingly, some of the cryptocurrency involved in these transfers passed through newly minted addresses before ultimately reaching their destination on Coinbase Prime.
The largest component of these recent transfers is indeed Bitcoin stemming from the 2016 Bitfinex hack. In August 2016, approximately 119,754 BTC were stolen from the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange. Subsequently, U.S. authorities successfully recovered over 94,000 BTC after gaining access to the private keys belonging to the hacker, Ilya Lichtenstein. At the time of its seizure in 2022, this recovered Bitcoin was valued at around $3.6 billion. Ilya Lichtenstein later pleaded guilty to a money laundering conspiracy charge in connection with the hack.
It is important to note that the act of moving these substantial crypto assets to Coinbase Prime does not necessarily indicate an immediate intent for sale. In 2024, Coinbase Prime was officially selected by the U.S. Marshals Service to provide custody services and advanced trading capabilities for its portfolio of large-cap digital assets. Therefore, government transfers to Coinbase Prime may often be related to routine asset management and secure custody practices. The U.S. government has not publicly disclosed the specific intended purpose behind these particular transactions, leaving the exact reasons open to speculation.
