Tinubu's Outrage: President Mourns Troops Killed in Deadly Borno Terrorist Attack, Vows Justice

President Bola Tinubu expressed profound sorrow following a deadly terrorist attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, on Thursday, April 9, 2026. The coordinated assault, which occurred in the early hours around 12:30 a.m., targeted troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation HADIN KAI. President Tinubu described the fallen troops as “unforgettable heroes” whose sacrifices would not be in vain, extending his condolences to the families of the slain soldiers and the Nigerian military. Among those confirmed killed in the intense assault was Brigadier-General O.O. Braimoh (also referred to as Oseni Omoh Braimah), alongside several other officers and soldiers.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) officially confirmed the attack, stating that Boko Haram insurgents attempted to breach the defensive perimeter of the military formation. However, troops, reportedly led by Brigadier-General Oseni Braimah, responded with “exceptional courage, professionalism, and superior firepower.” The military mounted a well-coordinated counterattack, decisively engaging the insurgents and forcing them to retreat in disarray, abandoning their mission. Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, described the attack as a clear indication of desperation by terrorist elements who have suffered significant losses in recent military operations across the North-East.

President Tinubu lauded the bravery of the troops, asserting that their resistance prevented a greater disaster. He noted that the armed forces have been conducting sustained land and air offensives against insurgents, neutralizing many fighters and commanders, making this counterattack a sign of desperation. The President paid special tribute to Brigadier-General Braimah and his colleagues for making the ultimate sacrifice in defending the country. He urged the military not to lose morale, pledging unwavering government support, including providing necessary equipment and ensuring the welfare of all who risk their lives for national safety. Furthermore, Tinubu called on Nigerians and the media to rally behind the military, desisting from actions or narratives that could undermine troop morale, emphasizing that soldiers are “heroes; unforgettable and irreplaceable.” He also extended condolences to the government and people of Borno State, affirming continued collaboration to achieve total victory and lasting peace.

However, the President’s remarks emerged amid troubling revelations from military sources who spoke to SaharaReporters, alleging systemic failures within the armed forces. These sources claimed that Brigadier-General Braimoh may have been unable to escape the attack due to a faulty armoured vehicle. According to the allegations, as insurgents overran the base, the late commander attempted to flee in a bulletproof vehicle, but it failed to start, leading to his capture and eventual death. The sources further highlighted issues such as poor maintenance of equipment and alleged diversion of funds meant for logistics and operations, forcing soldiers to operate with defective equipment in critical situations.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, honored the heroism, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment of the fallen soldiers, noting that their courage would inspire the Armed Forces of Nigeria. The military high command extended its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones, deferring the release of further details in line with protocol. Authorities also urged the public to disregard misinformation and sensational reports, emphasizing that such content undermines ongoing operations. Additional clearance and exploitation operations are underway in the area to track and neutralize fleeing insurgents, with the Armed Forces remaining resolute in their fight against terrorism and insurgency. Citizens were encouraged to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information to aid ongoing operations.
