BIIC Hits Record High as Banking Stocks Lift BRVM
The International Bank for Industry and Commerce of Benin (BIIC) has reached an all-time high, fueled by a significant rally in banking stocks across the BRVM. This surge, which saw major market indices climb, reflects strong investor confidence in the financial services sector, driven by prospects of earnings growth and expanding credit markets in the WAEMU region. Analysts caution that future gains will rely on fundamentals justifying current valuations.Banking stocks gave the West African regional stock market a strong push last week, with Banque Internationale pour l’Industrie et le Commerce du Bénin (BIIC) reaching a record ₣10,400.
BIIC, traded as BICB on the BRVM, gained 22.35% during the week ended September 4, finishing at ₣10,400, its highest price since it was listed.
The move came as financial stocks led a broader rally on the Bourse Régionale des Valeurs Mobilières (BRVM), the regional exchange serving the West African Economic and Monetary Union.
Banks led the rally
The BRVM Composite rose 3.50% to 548.60 points, while the BRVM Main Index gained 5.46% to 405.70.
The BRVM 30 also climbed 3.49%, while total equity market capitalisation rose 3.50% to about ₣21.15 trillion. Trading value jumped nearly 80% to ₣14.18 billion.
BIIC was not alone.
Coris Bank International Burkina Faso gained 13.01% during the week, BICI Côte d’Ivoire rose 11.88%, and ETI Togo added 9.23%. The financial services sector gained 5.58%.
The BRVM’s official market data records BIIC at ₣10,400 on September 4, with 6,011 shares traded that day.
BIIC's rise has been building
The latest jump is part of a much larger run.
BIIC's share price has more than doubled since the start of 2026, rising 109.05% over the year to September 4. It was also up 96.23% over the previous 12 months.
That kind of move naturally puts the company's financial performance under more scrutiny. A rising share price can reflect stronger expectations around earnings, dividends or future growth, but it does not prove that the company's underlying value has risen at the same pace.
For investors watching the BRVM, that distinction matters.
What the rally says about the BRVM
The strength of banking shares is significant because financial companies make up a large part of the regional market.
Last week's gains were also fairly broad. 31 listed stocks advanced while 13 declined, suggesting the rally was not limited to BIIC or a handful of major companies.
Africa Global Logistics Côte d'Ivoire was another strong performer, gaining 16.55% during the week.
Still, a sharp rise creates its own test. Once a stock has climbed this quickly, investors have to look beyond the price chart and ask what the company's earnings, dividends and future growth can actually support.
For BIIC, ₣10,400 is now the number to beat.
For the BRVM, the more important issue is whether the banking-led rally can hold after the excitement of a record week fades.
