Soludo's Iron Fist: Anambra Gov Shuts Nnewi Market for One Week Over Sit-At-Home Defiance

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the immediate closure of the New Auto Spare Parts Association (NASPA) Market at Nkwo Nnewi for a period of one week. This decisive action was taken due to the market's low compliance with the government's directive to end the Monday sit-at-home order that has impacted economic activities across the state.
The shutdown, which became effective from midnight on Monday, February 23, 2026, is slated to last until Monday, March 2, 2026. This measure follows a similar action taken by Governor Soludo barely three weeks prior, when the Onitsha Main Market was also closed for failing to open on Mondays, emphasizing the government's firm stance against the controversial sit-at-home directive, which has been linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The order to close the Nkwo Nnewi market was delivered on behalf of the governor by a delegation of high-ranking officials. This team included Chief Evarist Uba, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade and Markets; Dr. Law Mefor, the Commissioner for Information; AVM Ben Chiobi (Rtd), the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security; and Hon. Echezona Anazodo, the Mayor of Nnewi North Local Government Area.
In their statement, government officials explicitly warned traders and customers to avoid the Nkwo Nnewi market throughout the closure period to prevent any confrontations with law enforcement agencies. Furthermore, a stern warning was issued that the market faces the risk of an extended closure if there is no substantial compliance with the governor's directive when it is scheduled to reopen next Monday. Governor Soludo's administration remains committed to enforcing the cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home, insisting on the full resumption of normal economic and social activities across Anambra State.
