Political Firestorm: Trump's Bold Warning to FIFA Over Infantino's Fate

U.S. President Donald Trump publicly voiced his support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino on social media, cautioning that any move to replace him would constitute a “terrible mistake.” This defense comes amidst increasing pressure on Infantino from major soccer confederations concerning a contentious commercial proposal. Trump’s remarks signify his first direct endorsement of Infantino since the emergence of the aborted FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan on July 28.

The FFE proposal aimed to establish a new company that would manage commercial and ticketing rights for all FIFA events, including the prestigious World Cups. A significant 21% stake in this new entity was intended to be sold to a private investor group. However, the plan met strong opposition, with three prominent continental confederations—UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation—issuing a joint open letter. In this letter, they accused Infantino of betraying trust “through deception” regarding the controversial plan.

In his social media post, Trump emphatically stated, “FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing president Gianni Infantino.” He underscored his reasoning by referencing the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico, predicting it would be “the most successful World Cup, by four times, ever presented.”

Despite his public support, Trump had previously stated on July 31 that he had not engaged in discussions with Infantino concerning the FFE proposal. Further details revealed that the lead investor group for the FFE plan was identified as Thrive Eternal, a firm founded by Joshua Kushner, who is the brother of Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
