Obi's Olive Branch: 'No Abuse for Tinubu, Only Respect,' Declares Presidential Hopeful!

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has publicly affirmed his respect for President Bola Tinubu and other political office holders, emphasizing that his approach to political disagreement would never involve personal attacks or abuse. Speaking at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, themed “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,” Obi clarified his position on respectful discourse.

The former Anambra State governor stated unequivocally that he would not engage in any form of personal denigration against government officials, including President Tinubu. "I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in federal government. I’ve never abused anybody. Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country, he has all my respect," Obi asserted, reinforcing his commitment to decorum in political debate.

However, Obi maintained that this respect for public office holders does not, and should not, exempt them from rigorous scrutiny of their decisions and performance. He stressed that political disagreements should fundamentally center on policies, governance, and tangible performance rather than devolving into personal animosity. "But I can argue on other issues, whether you’re doing well, or you’re not doing the right thing. That is allowed," he added, highlighting the democratic necessity of critical evaluation.

Obi further underscored the profound influence of political leaders' character and conduct on the values of the broader society. He called upon media editors to fulfill their vital role by meticulously scrutinizing political leaders based on their verifiable records, public statements, and qualifications. This, he argued, is crucial for upholding accountability in public office, a principle he believes is essential for a functioning democracy. "We must, because the leader… the character and behaviour of the leader exemplifies the value of the society. And the leader must live it," Obi concluded, reiterating the importance of integrity and accountability from those in power.
