Data Power Play: CoinMarketCap Acquires Key BTC, XRP, SHIB Liquidation Tracker!
CoinMarketCap has acquired CoinGlass, a leading analytics platform for cryptocurrency derivatives data, including liquidations and open interest. This rare acquisition for CoinMarketCap highlights its expansion into specialized market insights, though CoinGlass will continue to operate independently.
CoinMarketCap, a prominent cryptocurrency tracking site, has officially acquired CoinGlass, a widely recognized analytics platform dedicated to cryptocurrency derivatives data. The completion of this transaction was announced on Thursday, although the specific financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. This strategic acquisition signifies an expansion for CoinMarketCap into specialized market analysis, while CoinGlass is slated to maintain its independent operations, including its existing website and mobile application.
CoinGlass serves as a critical resource for cryptocurrency traders, providing essential data on leveraged positioning for numerous digital assets. Its coverage extends to major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, XRP, and Shiba Inu, among hundreds of others. The platform is particularly noted for its comprehensive liquidation dashboards and heatmaps, which have become standard tools within the industry for assessing market dynamics. Currently, CoinGlass monitors 28 different exchanges and offers data for more than 2,500 instruments. Its suite of tools includes insights into open interest, funding rates, liquidations, long/short ratios, options information, ETF flows, and increasingly sophisticated market-structure analysis.
The genesis of CoinGlass involved an earlier identity and a notable legal encounter. Founded in 2019, the platform initially operated under the name Bybt. Aspects of its early history, including its identity as a cryptocurrency futures information platform, were revealed through a domain-name dispute with the cryptocurrency exchange Bybit, leading to a 2021 decision by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Interestingly, Bybit had previously attempted to invest in Bybt before its rebrand, but these investment negotiations ultimately failed due to unresolved disagreements. Subsequently, Bybit initiated a dispute, seeking control of the bybt.com domain on the grounds that it was confusingly similar to its own brand. However, the WIPO panel dismissed Bybit's complaint, acknowledging that the rebrand to CoinGlass had effectively resolved the persistent confusion between "Bybt" and "Bybit."
Historically, acquisitions have been an infrequent occurrence for CoinMarketCap. Its previous notable acquisition took place in June 2019, when it purchased Hashtag Capital, a smaller firm focused on cryptocurrency trading and data. CoinMarketCap itself was acquired by Binance in April 2020. The recent integration of CoinGlass into CoinMarketCap's portfolio marks a significant move, further solidifying its role as a comprehensive data provider in the rapidly evolving landscape of the cryptocurrency market.
