AFCON Qualifier Thriller: Super Eagles Triumphant Over Madagascar!

The Nigerian Super Eagles commenced their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a challenging fixture against Madagascar, ultimately securing a 2-1 victory. Head coach Éric Chelle unveiled his starting lineup for the crucial opening Group L match. The team featured Stanley Nwabali in goal, a defensive line comprising Ola Aina and Bruno Onyemaechi as full-backs, with experienced duo Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey in central defence. Captain Wilfred Ndidi anchored the midfield alongside Fulham star Alex Iwobi. Upfront, new talents George Ilenikhena, making his first start, and Akor Adams led the attack, supported by wingers Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze.

Preparations for the match were not without incident, as Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was the last of the 24 invited players to join the Super Eagles camp in Uyo. His late arrival on Friday morning, the day of the match, was attributed to club activities, following an appearance at Milan Fashion Week where he represented Udinese and was pictured with American rapper Cardi B. Despite criticisms for missing initial training sessions, Coach Chelle confirmed that all three goalkeepers, including Stanley Nwabali and Arthur Okonkwo, were eventually in camp. However, Okoye was expected to sit out the opening match against Madagascar. The game was scheduled for 5 pm at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The match itself proved to be a test of character for the Super Eagles. Nigeria, despite controlling 60% of possession and making 14 attempts on goal in the first half, found themselves trailing early. Madagascar capitalized on a well-executed corner kick, with Eshan exploiting a poor offside trap to meet Ryan Ponti's cross with a well-placed header, putting the Barea 1-0 up. However, the Super Eagles' persistence paid off just before halftime. Debutant George Ilenikhena, the Al-Ittihad striker, skillfully controlled an Alex Iwobi through ball before slotting it into the net, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 45th minute.

In the second half, Coach Chelle introduced fresh legs, including Moses Simon and another debutant, Moses Usor. It was Usor, the LASK Linz forward, who completed the Super Eagles' comeback with a spectacular solo goal. After collecting the ball from a cleared Madagascar corner, he raced towards goal, elegantly dribbling past two defenders before deceiving the goalkeeper with a finish at the near post to secure the 2-1 lead. Nigeria held off Madagascar's efforts to seal the victory, maintaining their unbeaten record against Madagascar in AFCON qualifiers history. This crucial win propelled Nigeria to joint-top of Group L alongside Guinea-Bissau. The Super Eagles are now set to travel to Bissau for their next match against the Djutus on Tuesday, September 29.
