Political Firestorm: Edo Governor's Aide Sparks Outrage With 'Stupid Man' Remark, Police React

The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Monday Agbonika, has faced significant scrutiny following the circulation of a viral video. The footage captures the Commissioner alongside Emmanuel Eghogho, a known comedian and an aide to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, who made several controversial and threatening remarks. In the video, Eghogho is heard vowing to hand over any member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) found in the state to the police commissioner. He also insultingly referred to former presidential candidate Peter Obi as a “stupid man.”
The video sparked widespread criticism from observers, who questioned the appropriateness of the Commissioner's demeanor, as he was filmed smiling during the exchange. This reaction led many Nigerians to perceive his smile as a subtle endorsement of the aide's actions and comments. Eghogho, who has reportedly made similar threats regarding Peter Obi's security in the state previously, walked away after delivering his remarks in the Commissioner's presence.
In response to the public outcry, the Edo State Police Command issued a statement on April 24, through its spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem. The Command clarified that the comments made by Emmanuel Eghogho are entirely his own and do not reflect the views, position, or disposition of the Commissioner of Police or the Edo State Police Command. The statement explicitly affirmed that CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, at no time endorsed, adopted, or aligned himself with Eghogho's remarks.
Furthermore, the Command indicated that Eghogho's remarks are being diligently interrogated for any potential security implications, beyond their context as comedy and showmanship. The statement underscored that CP Monday Agbonika remains a thorough professional and a non-partisan officer, fully committed to the constitutional mandate of the Nigeria Police Force. The Command reiterated its earlier call for all political parties, their supporters, and the general public to conduct their political activities peacefully, lawfully, and without hindrance. It also issued a strong warning that any acts of violence, incitement, thuggery, or any conduct capable of undermining public peace and security will not be tolerated and will be dealt with decisively in accordance with the law, affirming its commitment to maintaining peace, public safety, and protecting democratic processes across the State.
