Osimhen Fever: Real Madrid and Juventus Eye Nigerian Superstar

Juventus’ ongoing search for a decisive centre-forward has intensified speculation around Victor Osimhen, the Nigerian sensation currently excelling at Galatasaray. Former Juventus winger Massimo Mauro believes Osimhen possesses the quality to resolve the club’s attacking struggles, which remain a major concern despite their strong position in Serie A’s top five.

After 15 league games, Juventus sits fifth in the standings with 26 points, trailing leaders Inter Milan by seven. The Turin side has scored only 19 goals, eight of which came from open play, highlighting a clear deficiency in firepower. Mauro argues this gap underscores Juventus’ urgent need for a forward capable of independently transforming their offensive output.

Osimhen, in Mauro’s view, perfectly fits the profile of a transformative striker. Speaking to Football-Italia, he noted: “They need a Napoli-style Osimhen, a driving force who could carry the attack on his own and whom Luciano Spalletti turned into a true leader. Juve are full of solid, above-average players, but they need someone who makes a difference.”

The 25-year-old striker had been a top target for Juventus last summer. However, Napoli blocked any sale to their domestic rivals, eventually transferring Osimhen to Galatasaray with a clause preventing a Juventus move until at least 2027. Unable to secure Osimhen, Juventus signed Jonathan David from Lille and loaned Loïs Openda from RB Leipzig, yet these additions have not fully addressed their goal-scoring void, further complicated by Dusan Vlahovic’s injury.

Osimhen continues to shine in Turkey, scoring his 12th goal of the season in Galatasaray’s 4-1 away win over Antalyaspor. Six of these goals have come in four Champions League matches, cementing his impact on the European stage. He remains celebrated in Italy for leading Napoli to their first Scudetto in 33 years in 2023, finishing as Serie A’s top scorer and becoming the first African player to achieve this feat.

The recent appointment of Luciano Spalletti at Juventus, the coach behind Napoli’s historic title run, adds further intrigue to the Osimhen-Juventus connection. Mauro warns against relying solely on emerging talents like Yildiz, noting: “If Yildiz plays badly, it’s a tragedy. If he plays well, there’s a chance to create something dangerous, but Yildiz is not a 20-goal striker, unless he becomes Del Piero or plays as a central forward or support striker.”

Juventus recently secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Bologna, moving to within a point of fourth-placed Roma, who holds a game in hand. Despite the win, Mauro remains skeptical about Juventus’ offensive prospects in upcoming fixtures.

Looking ahead, Osimhen’s future in Italy is blocked, but Real Madrid reportedly monitors the striker as a potential replacement should Vinicius Junior depart. Former Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh suggested insiders indicate a possible Real Madrid move as early as next summer. Nevertheless, Osimhen has reaffirmed his commitment to Galatasaray, emphasizing his loyalty to his current club and life in Istanbul.
