Nigerian Star Olaolu Olorunnimbe Ignites MasterChef Australia 2026 with Bold Flavours!

Olaolu Olorunnimbe, a 34-year-old brand consultant born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, has achieved a significant milestone by securing a coveted white apron on MasterChef Australia Season 18, which is set to air in 2026. This accomplishment places him among the Top 24 home cooks vying for the prestigious title, marking a pivotal moment for Nigerian cuisine on one of Australia's most-watched cooking shows.
Olorunnimbe's audition dish, a traditional Ofada stew, was served with rice, plantain, and a coconut and carrot sambal, and reportedly stopped the judges in their tracks. The dish featured bold Nigerian ingredients such as tripe, offal, and fiery scotch bonnet chilli, which Olaolu intentionally chose to challenge conventional Australian palates. Judge Jean-Christophe Novelli was particularly impressed, praising the plantain as "the best plantain that I have had so far in my life."
Olaolu's culinary journey is deeply rooted in his heritage. After leaving Lagos at age 12 to attend boarding school in England, he spent years adapting to new environments and cuisines. It was during his university years, with access to his own kitchen, that he reconnected with the flavors of home. This connection deepened further after his move to Sydney in 2017. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, cut off from travel and craving Nigerian food, he reached out to his mother, sisters, aunts, and friends for recipes. This effort led him to cook in earnest and eventually launch a home kitchen pop-up selling Jollof rice, which garnered overwhelming positive feedback.
MasterChef Australia, now in its 18th season, features 40 home cooks auditioning live before a panel of judges including Andy Allen, Poh Ling Yeow, Sofia Levin, and Jean-Christophe Novelli. Only 24 contestants earn a white apron and a place in the main competition, where they compete for a grand prize of $250,000 and the title of Australia's next MasterChef.
Reflecting on his achievement, Olaolu described securing the apron as a "miracle" after feeling that getting to the auditions was already a long shot. He expressed immense gratitude for his support system, acknowledging that "it takes a village to raise a wannabe chef." Beyond the competition, Olorunnimbe harbors ambitious plans to further showcase Nigerian food in Australia, including opening a restaurant, developing food products, and operating a food truck that travels across the country.
