Nigerian Star Michelle Alozie Reacts to Historic FIFPRO XI Nomination
)
Super Falcons defender Michelle Alozie has expressed profound disbelief and gratitude following her nomination to the 2025 FIFPRO Women's World XI shortlist, a recognition she described as "insane." Alozie holds the distinction of being the sole Nigerian player among the 25 finalists for this prestigious, peer-voted global award. Her inclusion comes amidst a backdrop of criticism regarding a perceived "Eurocentric bias" in the selection process, particularly after the omission of several prominent African stars from the recent Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Alozie shared her heartfelt sentiments during a live TikTok session when questioned about her unexpected nomination by a Pulse Sports Nigeria reporter. She was quick to acknowledge her national teammates, attributing her global recognition to the platform provided by the Super Falcons. "It's insane," Alozie stated, "There are amazing people on that list. Obviously, without the Super Falcons and how we performed at WAFCON, I wouldn't be on that list. So, shoutout to the Super Falcons crew." This nomination caps a phenomenal year for Alozie, where her consistent performances played a key role in Nigeria clinching a historic 10th WAFCON title. Her strong form for the Houston Dash in the NWSL also contributed significantly to her selection by professional players worldwide.
Despite Alozie's personal triumph, the 25-player shortlist, determined by votes from professional footballers globally, has stirred controversy, with critics pointing to a "Eurocentric bias." A notable point of contention for Nigerian fans is the absence of Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was recognized as the WAFCON Player of the Tournament, and Nigerian hero Esther Okoronkwo. Their exclusion, alongside other high-performing African players, means Alozie, Zambia's Barbara Banda, and Morocco's Ghizlane Chebbak are the only African representatives on the current list.
The FIFPRO World XI shortlist is distinct because it remains the only global football award decided exclusively by the votes of professional footballers. The 25 players who garnered the most votes for their respective positions, based on performances throughout the season, are included on this esteemed shortlist. The final team of 11 will be composed of one goalkeeper, three defenders, three midfielders, and three forwards, with the remaining outfield spot allocated to the player with the next highest vote total. The full XI is slated to be officially revealed on November 3, 2025.
