Netflix Shocks South Africa: Subscription Prices Soar Up to 20% This June!

Video streaming giant Netflix has initiated a series of price adjustments across its subscription plans in various global markets, with a notable recent increase in South Africa. The platform discreetly hiked the prices of its Mobile, Standard, and Premium plans in South Africa, leading to customers paying between 13% and 20% more than their previous costs. While Netflix has not issued a public statement, subscribers are being notified via email about the price hike, which became effective from June, with rollout based on individual billing dates. The company hinted on its website that changes to local taxes, inflation, service upgrades, and new feature additions contribute to such adjustments. This marks the second time Netflix has increased prices in South Africa since its global launch in January 2016, with the last adjustment occurring in October 2021.
In South Africa's new pricing structure, the Netflix Standard plan increased by 13% from $8.81 (R159) to $9.92 (R179). The Mobile plan saw its first-ever price increase, going up 20% from $2.71 (R49) to $3.2 (R59). Premium subscribers experienced a 15% increase, raising their fee to $12.68 (R229) from $11 (R199), while the Basic plan remains unchanged at R99 per month. Subscribers whose billing date falls before June 7 were exempt from the immediate increase, enjoying an additional month at the old rates before the new prices apply based on their specific billing cycle.
The trend of price adjustments extends beyond South Africa, with Nigeria having experienced similar increases. In July 2024, the Netflix Standard plan in Nigeria saw a 37.5% increment, rising from N4,000 to N5,500. The Basic plan increased by 21% from N2,900 to N3,500, and the Mobile plan surged by 83% from N1,200 to N2,200. The Premium Plan also saw a 40% hike from N5,000 per month. These changes in Nigeria, which included an earlier increment in April 2024, were part of Netflix's strategy to revise subscription fees across various regions, aiming to accelerate revenue and earnings growth and support the expansion of content offerings.
Globally, Netflix announced during its Q1 2025 results in January 2025 that prices were increasing in the US, Canada, Argentina, and Portugal. This was followed by a price hike in the UK in February and New Zealand in April. In the US, for instance, the ad-supported tier was raised from $6.99 to $7.99 per month, the standard ad-free tier from $15.49 to $17.99 per month, and the premium tier from $22.99 to $24.99 per month. These continuous price adjustments underscore Netflix's broader strategy, which includes expanding its advertising and ad tech platform.
Netflix's Q1 2025 financial report highlighted a strong performance, with $10.54 billion in revenue and $3.3 billion in operating income, representing a 12.5% increase compared to Q1 2024 revenue. The company also announced a significant change by halting the disclosure of its subscriber figures, a metric traditionally used by investors to gauge growth. Experts suggest this change may be linked to a declining subscriber growth rate, despite ending 2024 with a substantial subscriber base of 302 million. Looking ahead, Netflix anticipates a 15% revenue growth in Q2 2025, largely attributed to these price increases, and aims to achieve sufficient scale with its member base in all ad countries by 2025.
