NBA Stars' Seasons End Abruptly! Kings' Sabonis, LaVine Undergo Season-Ending Surgeries!

The Sacramento Kings, currently grappling with a league-worst 12-44 record and a demoralizing 14-game losing streak, have seen their two highest-paid players, Domantas Sabonis and Zach LaVine, undergo season-ending surgeries. Both players' decisions underscore the team's dire situation and their individual focuses on recovery for the upcoming season, as their playoff aspirations have long since vanished.
Domantas Sabonis underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The injury was initially sustained in mid-November, leading him to miss 27 games while attempting rehabilitation. Despite a relatively productive eight-game return before the All-Star break, the futility of the Kings' season prompted Sabonis to opt for a full surgical repair, prioritizing his long-term health and readiness for the next campaign. Sabonis still has two years and a substantial $94 million remaining on his current contract with the Kings.
Zach LaVine finds himself in a similar predicament, also opting for season-ending surgery on a tendon injury in his right hand. Prior to the All-Star break, LaVine had been averaging 19.2 points across 39 games, though he had also missed five of the ten games leading up to the break due to the persistent injury. All indications suggest that LaVine will exercise his $48.9 million player option for next season, effectively opting in to the final year of his current deal with the Kings.
The surgeries come after Sacramento had actively explored the trade market for both Sabonis and LaVine prior to the recent trade deadline, but ultimately failed to secure any deals. With the team now looking towards the future, it is widely anticipated that the Kings' new general manager, Scott Perry, will re-engage in these trade discussions over the summer, as the franchise seeks to reshape its roster and address its ongoing struggles. The focus for both players and the organization now shifts to recovery and strategic planning for the seasons ahead.
