Meryl Streep Roars as Aslan: First Glimpse of Netflix's Narnia Reboot Unveiled!
Netflix has unveiled details for its upcoming adaptation of C.S. Lewis' 'Narnia: The Magician's Nephew,' including a first look at key characters and release dates. Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film introduces Meryl Streep as the voice of Aslan and Emma Mackey as Jadis, setting the stage for an ambitious new take on the beloved magical world.
Netflix has begun to unveil exciting details for its new adaptation of C.S. Lewis' beloved 'Chronicles of Narnia,' starting with 'Narnia: The Magician's Nephew.'
Following the recent reveal of its glittering logo, the streaming giant has now offered a first look at two of the film's most fantastical beings.
The movie is slated to premiere in theaters on February 12, 2027, before streaming exclusively on Netflix on April 2, marking the beginning of a reported two-film deal between Netflix, the Lewis estate, and writer-director Greta Gerwig to bring Narnia to life.
'The Magician's Nephew' is chronologically the first book in the seven-book series, though it was the sixth to be written by Lewis.
This choice is notably unconventional as it has never been adapted for the screen before, unlike the better-known 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,' which Lewis wrote first and has traditionally been the initial story adapted.
Empire magazine provided the exclusive reveal of two primary characters. Aslan, the majestic lion and Narnia's creator and protector—intended by Lewis as an incarnation of Jesus Christ—will be voiced by Meryl Streep.
This casting decision, assigning a traditionally male character to a female voice actor, has sparked discussion.
Gerwig defended her choice, explaining her desire for a voice that was " profound but not pretentious, who had gravitas but not morose self-seriousness. Someone who could communicate depth and pathos as well as joy and delight."
She sought an actor over 70, possessing both wisdom and childlike wonder, and one of the greatest actors of all time.
They also revealed was the first shot of Jadis, portrayed by Emma Mackey, in her glittering finery.
Jadis is introduced as the cruel sorceress who was the last queen of Charn, a world preceding Narnia.
Having survived Charn's destruction, she finds her way to the nascent Narnia, where she attains immense power and immortality, but at the cost of her humanity.
Her transformation leads to her chalk-white skin and her eventual identity as the White Witch, who becomes a formidable antagonist to the Pevensie children in 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.'
The film is directed by Greta Gerwig, who also shares writing credits with C.S. Lewis. Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, and Rachel O'Connor serve as producers.
The cast includes Emma Mackey as Jadis / The White Witch, Meryl Streep as the voice of Aslan, Carey Mulligan as Mabel Kirke, and David McKenna as Digory Kirke.
