Falconets Soar: Nigeria's U20 Women Conquer England 3-0, Secure World Cup Quarter-Final Spot!

Nigeria’s U20 girls, known as the Falconets, displayed formidable prowess on Thursday afternoon, defeating England’s Young Lionesses 3-0 to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the ongoing FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals in Poland. Playing at the Bielsko-Biala Stadium, the two-time World Cup silver-medallists started with high intensity from the opening whistle, showcasing superior firepower that proved too much for their opponents in the round-of-16 encounter.

The Falconets broke the deadlock in the 8th minute when Tosin Rafiu netted a brilliant solo effort. Rafiu raced through on goal, turning England midfielder May Cruft inside out in the penalty area before slotting a low shot into the far corner of the net, putting Nigeria 1-0 ahead. England attempted to retaliate through players like Lily Dent, Princess Ademiluyi, and Rachel Maltby, but Nigeria’s backline remained resolute.

A critical moment occurred in the 33rd minute when a Video Assistant Referee review led to a penalty kick for England. However, Nigeria’s goalkeeper and captain, Christiana Uzoma, emerged as an important performer of the day. She made a crucial save, denying Maltby from six yards by tipping the spot-kick onto the bar before gathering the ball, thereby preserving her team’s lead. Uzoma made six significant saves in a first period where Nigeria's defense had to work hard to contain the physical presence of Ademiluyi. The Falconets maintained their composure and went into half-time with a 1-0 advantage.

The second half commenced perfectly for Nigeria. Just two minutes after the restart, in the 47th minute, Janet Akekoromowei doubled the lead with a clinical strike. Her volley into the net at the near post, following a half-cleared corner kick, put England under immense pressure. The victory was sealed in the 73rd minute when Mary Mamudu (also referred to as Mmadu), who had been introduced in the 61st minute for Ramotalahi Kareem, made an immediate impact. She latched onto an assist from Precious Oscar, following Akekoromowei’s interception on the edge of the box, and slotted home Nigeria’s third goal, effectively concluding the contest.

This impressive victory marks Nigeria’s second win over England in the tournament's history and extends the Falconets' unbeaten record against the European nation. Nigeria has now qualified for the quarter-final stage for the ninth time in tournament history, marking their first appearance in the last-eight since 2022. The Falconets will proceed to face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between Poland and Colombia on Sunday, September 20. That quarter-final duel is scheduled to take place at the Władyław Król Municipal Stadium in Łódź, starting from 2pm Nigeria time.

Coach Moses Aduku expressed his satisfaction, stating, “We are very happy with this victory. The girls had a very motivating conference call with the NFF Acting General Secretary on Wednesday night and they promised to go all out today. I am happy they did that. We will go back to Łódź and aim for victory against either Poland or Colombia on Sunday.”
