The Nigerian Falconets have made a significant stride in their quest for a maiden FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title, securing a dominant 3-0 victory over England in the Round of 16 on Thursday. This emphatic win propels them into the quarter-finals of the 2026 tournament, marking a remarkable recovery after a challenging start.

Head coach Moses Aduku attributed the stunning win to England's underestimation of his team's capabilities. "The English team is a very good side, and I think they underrated us; they never believed that we could play up to this level," Aduku stated post-match, emphasizing that the World Cup truly began for his team after the group stage. Nigeria’s early lead came in the eighth minute when Tosin Rafiu intercepted a pass, drove forward, and fired past England goalkeeper Katie Cox. This will be the first-ever Nigeria-Colombia match at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, though there is a history between the nations at the U-17 level. Nigeria claimed victories in 2012 (3-0) and 2014 (2-1), but Colombia eventually prevailed in a 2022 U-17 World Cup semi-final, winning 6-5 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

Coach Aduku has cautioned his players to remain focused, emphasizing that the victory over England is in the past and their attention must now be on the next challenge. The winner of the Nigeria-Colombia encounter will advance to the semi-finals on September 23, where they will face either North Korea, the defending champions, or Canada.
