Mbappé Magic: France Dominates Senegal in Thrilling World Cup Clash!
France secured a 3-1 victory over Senegal in a World Cup 2026 match, overcoming a slow start with a dominant second-half performance. Kylian Mbappé notably scored twice, setting a new record as France's all-time leading goalscorer, while Michael Olise provided crucial assists.
The World Cup favourites, France, overcame an ominous start against Senegal, transforming a sputtering first-half performance into a dominant second period characterized by impressive physical intensity and technical ability. The match, which concluded with a 3-1 victory for Les Bleus, saw Kylian Mbappé achieve a historic milestone, becoming France’s all-time leading goalscorer, while Michael Olise provided superlative playmaking.
The game’s initial 45 minutes proved to be largely an exercise in spoiled endeavours for both sides. France had early glimpses of opportunities, with Ousmane Dembélé attempting to set up Mbappé, but the captain failed to control the ball. Senegal also showed defensive solidity, with Kalidou Koulibaly making a casual but ultimately harmless chest control. Former Chelsea keeper Édouard Mendy narrowly avoided being dispossessed by Dembélé on the edge of his box.
After surviving the initial scrappy passage of play, Senegal began to assert themselves. Their first clear chance arrived in the 25th minute when Nicolas Jackson, after a sliding tackle from El Hadji Malick Diouf, broke clear down the left, only for his shot to hit the inside of the near post and deflect wide off Mike Maignan’s heel. Following a hydration break, Senegal appeared the better side, demonstrating composure off the ball and increased danger on the break. Just before half-time, they should have taken the lead when Sadio Mané ghosted into the France box and laid the ball off, but Ismaïla Sarr made poor contact, sending his shot sailing over the bar. France, lacking a clear attacking identity and physical intensity, clearly needed a shift in their approach.
The interval saw a revitalized French side return with greater fire and assertiveness. Desiré Doué immediately had a shot that bent around the post. Five minutes later, the Paris Saint-Germain forward initiated a break that almost put Mbappé through. Then, Michael Olise had his moment, resulting from a midfield turnover, putting him in a clear one-on-one with Mendy, who made a crucial sprawling save. Minutes later, Olise again sent Mbappé clear, but Mendy once more made a vital contact on the shot.
By the hour mark, France had decisively become the dominant team, and a goal seemed imminent. A moment of controversy arose when Mbappé burst down the right and was involved in a sliding challenge with Sadio Mané inside the box. The Australian referee, Alireza Faghani, awarded a corner, and despite video replays suggesting a foul, he chose not to overturn his decision after consulting the monitor, to the surprise of many.
However, the referee’s decision did not deter France’s momentum. Olise and Mbappé continued to link up flawlessly. Almost immediately, Olise burst through the middle and slipped a ball beyond the Senegal defense that Mbappé just couldn’t reach. Undeterred, the next time the ball came to Olise, about 30 yards out, he delivered a superlative pass that bisected two lines of the opposition. Coming left to right, Mbappé beat everyone to Olise’s pass, turned back, and slotted a first-time shot into the net with consummate ease, opening the scoring for France.
Following the opener, Jackson had a couple of efforts for Senegal, one of which he blazed into the top corner only for it to be ruled offside. The sense that the contest had been decided grew as Les Bleus maintained a level their opponents couldn’t match. Dembélé was substituted for his club teammate Bradley Barcola, who seemed to eliminate all doubt by running onto another diagonal through ball, this time from Adrien Rabiot, and calmly slotted it past Mendy, doubling France's lead.
Despite the apparent conclusion, a frenetic period of added time brought more action. First, substitute Ibrahim Mbaye slammed in a shot that Maignan could not stop, giving Senegal brief hope. Not to be outdone, Mbappé then blasted one from range, which Mendy might have handled better, scoring his second goal of the match and his 58th for France, officially making him his country’s all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing Olivier Giroud.
