Volkswagen, once celebrated for its engineering prowess, including creating both the fastest production car and highly efficient vehicles, is striving to reclaim its reputation with the groundbreaking Mission Efficiency concept. This "near-production" electric vehicle (EV) concept aims to establish a new benchmark for automotive efficiency, building upon the company's legacy after a challenging decade.

The Mission Efficiency concept directly challenges and significantly surpasses the previous title holder for efficiency, the Mercedes-Benz EQXX EV concept. The EQXX boasted an impressive 7.1 miles per kWh and a remarkable 747 miles of range from its 100-kWh battery pack. These figures were achieved through an exceptional 0.17 coefficient of drag (Cd) and a relatively light curb weight of 3,870 pounds for an EV with a large battery.

Volkswagen's Mission Efficiency concept eclipses these numbers with an unheard-of efficiency of 9 miles per kWh. Coupled with a smaller 54.9-kWh battery, it still manages an impressive range of 514.5 miles. This represents a significant achievement, delivering substantial range with a battery pack that is just over half the capacity of the EQXX's. The concept also boasts a 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of 9 seconds. For context, most production EVs currently struggle to exceed 4 miles per kWh, with even ambitious targets like Lucid's 5-miles-per-kWh production car still in the future.

A critical factor in the Mission Efficiency's superior performance is its aerodynamic design, achieving an astonishing coefficient of drag of just 0.158. While the exact curb weight has not been released, the concept's more compact dimensions likely contribute to its efficiency. It measures 188.0 inches long, 68.6 inches wide, and 54.8 inches tall, making it substantially smaller than the EQXX, which is 195.9 inches long, 73.6 inches wide, and 53.1 inches tall. Furthermore, its frontal area is 2.08 square meters, slightly less than the EQXX's 2.10 square meters, meaning it has to push through less air.

In a distinct approach from the EQXX, which pioneered new technologies destined for future production models like the CLA-Class, the Mission Efficiency concept ingeniously utilizes existing production parts within its experimental framework. Its battery and 133-hp electric motor are sourced directly from an ID Polo, a compact electric hatchback sold in European and other markets. This smart integration allows the concept's aerodynamically optimized shape to dramatically reduce energy consumption; Volkswagen claims it requires the same amount of energy to cruise at 87 mph as the ID Polo needs to maintain 62 mph. The Mission Efficiency concept's top speed is electronically limited to 99 mph.
