The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks introduce a radically redesigned interface featuring smarter, programmable screens and an all-new passenger display. With a holistic design approach, the new system offers extensive driver customization, quick-access shortcuts, and an impressive suite of 19 camera views for enhanced utility and user interaction.
General Motors is set to launch the highly anticipated 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra half-ton pickup trucks, which promise substantial advancements in user interaction and screen technology. While an increase in screen real estate is a common trend in new vehicles, GM is focusing on improving the *quality* of user engagement with these new displays.
A holistic design approach underpins the new system, as explained by executive director of human interface design, Sebastian Bauer. He emphasized that the instrument cluster, the center display, and the front passenger infotainment screen were all conceived as a unified, cohesive system. This integration ensures a seamless user experience across all digital interfaces within the cabin.
The redesigned interface features smarter shortcuts and improved screen programmability. For instance, popular screen-mirroring applications like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are seamlessly integrated on the right side of the main infotainment screen. Crucially, a generously sized area to the left – strategically placed closer to the driver's hand on the steering wheel – can be fully programmed to display information or controls that the driver uses most frequently.
These programmable buttons offer remarkable utility. They can include a garage door opener, which can be intelligently geofenced to appear only when the vehicle is within range of the garage. Similarly, the parking proximity warning button can be configured to surface only when needed, allowing the driver to quickly silence alerts. Furthermore, controls for essential vehicle functions such as traction control or various off-road accessories like winches and lights can be grouped in this area, leveraging provided wiring for virtual auxiliary switches. When navigating with CarPlay, the media player can be displayed concurrently to the left of the CarPlay screen, enabling drivers to change audio sources or tracks without having to switch to a dedicated audio display. Artist and title information can also be integrated as a tile on one of the optional instrument cluster views. Other customizable home-screen options include fuel consumption data and detailed trailering information, making the system highly adaptable to individual driver preferences.
Beyond customization, the system also incorporates practical quick workarounds. A simple swipe down from the top of the screen reveals a menu of shortcuts addressing common user 'pain points.' This includes quick access to recently connected phones, allowing for easy switching between devices, as well as controls for privacy settings, microphone preferences, location data, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Adding to the truck's advanced capabilities is an extensive camera system, offering 19 distinct views from 11 different cameras. While many camera views will be familiar, off-road variants of the Silverado and Sierra will feature two innovative underbody cameras, complete with integrated cleaners that draw fluid from the windshield washer reservoir. Interior cameras provide versatile monitoring options, from a focused view of rear seat passengers to a wider fisheye perspective of the entire cabin. Naturally, these trucks will also support the display of feeds from additional trailer-mounted cameras, enhancing visibility and safety during towing maneuvers.
