Massive Blow to African Cybercrime! 53 Nabbed in Accra Bust

A multi-agency security operation has successfully dismantled a sophisticated network of suspected cybercrime centres operating across several suburbs in Greater Accra, resulting in the arrest of 53 Nigerian nationals. The coordinated raids, carried out on January 16 and 17, 2026, followed actionable intelligence provided by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA).

According to the intelligence reports, young men were allegedly being exploited and coerced into cybercrime by criminal masterminds, commonly referred to as “kingpins,” who operated from residential properties. The identified locations of these illegal operations included East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba.

The operation was executed by a joint task force comprising personnel from National Security, the CSA, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, and the Police SWAT unit. During the synchronized raids, authorities carefully distinguished between suspected perpetrators and individuals believed to be victims of coercion.

Nine individuals were formally arrested as suspects directly linked to the cybercrime network. An additional 44 individuals, found actively operating laptops in the apartments, were classified as rescued victims. Investigators believe these individuals were lured into Ghana under false pretences and subsequently forced to engage in illegal cyber activities.

Security operatives also seized equipment believed to be central to the network’s operations, including 62 laptop computers, 52 mobile phones, and two pump-action guns, underscoring the organised and potentially violent nature of the syndicate.

Communications Minister Sam George, in a statement issued on January 18, confirmed that all arrested individuals had been profiled and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for safekeeping and further investigation. He cautioned foreign nationals to carefully verify claims made by compatriots who encourage them to travel to Ghana, warning of the risks involved.

Minister George noted that the operation forms part of a sustained national effort to combat cybercrime, revealing that suspects from earlier raids have either been repatriated to Nigeria through the Seme border or are currently facing prosecution in Ghanaian courts. Reaffirming the government’s stance, he stated that protecting Ghana’s international cyber reputation is “non-negotiable” and commended the CSA and partner security agencies for their continued commitment to safeguarding the country’s cyber integrity.
