Lexus Revamps Future: 2027 NX Goes All-Hybrid with Massive Update!

The 2027 Lexus NX is set to undergo a significant transformation, moving exclusively to an all-hybrid powertrain lineup. This compact luxury SUV, a strong competitor in its segment against rivals such as the Genesis GV70 and BMW X3, will feature extensive mechanical, technological, and safety upgrades designed to breathe new life into its second generation, which first appeared in the 2022 model year.

Styling refinements are a key part of the update. The 2027 Lexus NX will be identifiable by a new front fascia, featuring a sharpened and sportier spindle grille that is more streamlined and aesthetically pleasing. The previous “Nike swoosh” daytime running lights have been replaced with a more modern two-bar design, consisting of a longer strip on top and a shorter one below. Aerodynamic enhancements include more rigid side ducts to stabilize airflow around the tires and new fins within the wheel wells to disperse air, ultimately improving vehicle stability. At the rear, the traditional chrome “Lexus” badging is replaced by a light-up logo, and the full-width taillights now echo the new “Double L Signature” seen in the headlights.

Under the hood, the most significant change is the discontinuation of the gas-only drivetrain, which previously utilized a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. For 2027, the NX 350h hybrid will become the new base model, while the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will continue as the range-topping option. While the hybrid NX 350h carries over its powertrain without changes, the NX 450h+ PHEV receives a series of crucial updates.

Lexus has integrated the NX 450h+’s transaxle, motor, and power control unit into a single, compact package referred to as the e-Axle assembly. This innovation results in a lighter system with a lower center of gravity, contributing to improved dynamics. Further efficiency gains come from the adoption of silicon-carbide power semiconductors in the inverter. The PHEV’s battery also sees an 8 percent increase in output and a substantial 30 percent boost in capacity. These enhancements collectively extend the NX 450h+’s all-electric driving range to approximately 40 miles, a notable increase from the previous 37 miles. Lexus has also redesigned the NX PHEV’s engine block, adding reinforcements between the engine and transaxle to enhance rigidity, thereby reducing noise and vibrations. Despite these extensive mechanical changes, the NX 450h+ is expected to maintain its current output of about 304 horsepower for 2027.

Beyond the powertrain, all versions of the 2027 Lexus NX benefit from increased body rigidity. The comprehensive updates extend to retuned suspension, steering, brakes, and accelerator calibration. Lexus emphasizes that these thorough revisions were implemented to significantly improve the vehicle’s comfort, overall refinement, and the driver’s connection with the road.
