Maguire's Legal Woes: Star Defender Receives Suspended Sentence for Greece Incident

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was given a 15-month suspended sentence by Greece's Supreme Court on Wednesday. This sentence relates to an incident that occurred in Mykonos in 2020. The Press Association reported that Maguire plans to challenge this latest sentence, which itself was a reduction from an initial 21-month sentence imposed in 2020. An appeal to a higher court will effectively quash this new judgment, mirroring the process when Maguire appealed against the first sentence in 2020.

Sources close to the player, as reported by PA, indicated that Maguire and his legal representatives rejected multiple attempts to settle the case out of court with a financial offer. These efforts included one made during a recess in Wednesday's hearing, but Maguire remains committed to proving his innocence.

Maguire did not attend the hearing in Greece and, according to PA, was available for Manchester United's match against Newcastle on Wednesday evening. PA also confirmed that no travel restrictions were placed on Maguire, meaning he remains eligible for England's World Cup squad this summer.

The initial charges in 2020 led to Maguire being found guilty of assaulting a police officer, swearing, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery. Wednesday's 15-month suspended sentence was reportedly imposed for non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery.

While Maguire has not yet commented on Wednesday's sentencing, he previously told the BBC in August 2020 that he was "scared for his life" during the incident and believed he, his family, and friends were being kidnapped. He recounted the experience to BBC Sport, stating, "We got down on our knees, we put our hands in the air, they just started hitting us. They were hitting my leg saying my career's over: 'No more football. You won't play again.' And at this point I thought there is no chance these are police or I don't know who they are, so I tried to run away, I was in that much of a panic, fear, scared for my life. All the way through it." Manchester United has been approached for comment regarding the latest developments. PA contributed to this report.
