Harry Maguire Receives Suspended Sentence for Greece Incident
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been handed a 15-month suspended sentence by Greece's Supreme Court for an incident that occurred in Mykonos in 2020.
This latest sentence is a reduction from the initial 21-month sentence imposed in 2020.
Maguire plans to challenge the ruling, with an appeal to a higher court expected to effectively quash the judgment, following the same process used after his original conviction.
Sources close to Maguire indicated that he and his legal team rejected multiple attempts to settle the case out of court with financial offers, including one made during a recess in Wednesday’s hearing.
They remain determined to prove his innocence rather than accept a compromise. Maguire did not attend the hearing, as he was available for Manchester United’s Premier League match against Newcastle on the same day.
There are no travel restrictions, meaning he is also eligible for England’s World Cup squad this summer.
The original 2020 charges found Maguire guilty of assaulting a police officer, swearing, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery.
Wednesday’s reduced sentence reportedly covers non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery.
The legal developments have drawn attention due to Maguire’s high-profile status and the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the Mykonos incident.
Maguire has not yet publicly commented on Wednesday’s sentencing.
In August 2020, he told the BBC that he was “scared for his life” during the incident, recounting how he, his family, and friends were attacked and threatened.
He described being hit while on his knees with police allegedly saying his football career was over, which prompted him to try to escape in a state of panic and fear.
Manchester United has been approached for comment regarding the latest developments.
