IPOB Threatens 2027 Election Boycott Over Nnamdi Kanu Appeal

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a stringent 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria, demanding the immediate listing and hearing of its leader Nnamdi Kanu's appeal before the Court of Appeal. The group has warned that failure to comply with this demand will result in a total boycott of forthcoming general elections, including the 2027 elections, across Biafraland and beyond.

This ultimatum was conveyed in a statement released on Tuesday by IPOB's spokesperson, Emma Powerful. IPOB has accused the Federal Government of displaying a significant lack of urgency in defending Kanu's conviction, a stark contrast to the swiftness with which it pursued his prosecution. The group pointed out that the government has neither filed a respondent's brief, nor appeared before the Court of Appeal to defend the conviction, nor ensured the appeal's listing. IPOB's statement critically noted, "A country that rushed to convict is now too frightened to defend the conviction," raising profound questions about the government's sincerity in the legal process.

Furthermore, IPOB has challenged the fundamental legal basis for Kanu's conviction and his prolonged detention. The group demanded explicit answers to crucial questions: "Under which extant written law was Mazi Nnamdi Kanu convicted? What specific crime, cognisable under Nigerian law, justifies his continued detention after nearly six years?" These inquiries highlight IPOB's deep concerns regarding the legitimacy and justification of Kanu's ongoing incarceration.

Nnamdi Kanu himself is actively contesting both his conviction and the life sentence imposed upon him before the Court of Appeal. His family recently disclosed that he has formally written to both the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the President of the Court of Appeal, directly appealing for the swift listing and hearing of his pending appeal.

Adding another layer of complexity to the legal battle, IPOB has also challenged a previous ruling by the Supreme Court. The group contested the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Kanu’s discharge and acquittal by the Court of Appeal in October 2022. IPOB alleged that the Supreme Court exceeded its constitutional powers by making pronouncements on individual charges that had previously been quashed by the appellate court. Consequently, IPOB maintains that the Federal Government is obligated to defend not only Kanu's conviction but also the jurisdictional and legal foundation upon which his resumed trial was conducted.

The proposed election boycott is a pivotal component of IPOB's strategy. The group has proactively defended this stance against arguments suggesting that non-participation might inadvertently benefit President Bola Tinubu’s administration. IPOB recalled that its supporters did participate in the 2023 general election, but the results were heavily disputed, and subsequent legal challenges proved unsuccessful. This historical context, according to IPOB, has fostered profound disillusionment with the effectiveness of the electoral process, especially given persistent allegations of rigging and unfruitful court battles. The group views a collective refusal to participate in elections as a potent political statement, reflecting a populace that has lost confidence in the integrity and fairness of the electoral system.

IPOB has presented the Federal Government with two clear options: either ensure the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, or appear in court without delay to robustly defend his conviction and the legal grounds of his trial. The group has urged those who might be opposed to the proposed election boycott to instead direct their efforts towards ensuring that Nnamdi Kanu’s appeal is promptly listed and heard, emphasizing this as the critical step to avert the planned boycott. The demand for Kanu's immediate and unconditional release was reiterated, with a firm warning that the 14-day deadline remains sacrosanct and its expiration will trigger the comprehensive election boycott across Biafraland and beyond.
