Late Setback for Liverpool in Shock Loss to Bottom Wolves
Liverpool suffered an embarrassing 2-1 defeat at Wolves as Andre's stoppage-time strike sealed a dramatic victory for the Premier League's bottom club on Tuesday.
Liverpool have conceded 14 goals in the last 15 minutes of the second half, including five in the 90th minute or later, the most by any side in a single season in the Premier League era.
The Reds remain fifth but their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League have been hurt by a defeat that means sixth-placed Chelsea will go above them if they beat Aston Villa on Wednesday.
Liverpool has conceded late goals against Fulham and Leeds United, losing nine crucial points. Coach Arne Slot summed it up after the match: ‘Same old story.’
This season, a mix of bad luck and poor defending has often cost the Reds, resulting in defeats that go beyond just unlucky moments, despite claims of missed fouls and deflections.
Ahead of the match, Slot criticized the Premier League’s focus on physicality and set pieces, saying,
‘Do I like it? My football heart doesn’t like it.’
Liverpool offered little to excite fans in the first half at Molineux, with only Cody Gakpo creating a chance.
Wolves, meanwhile, absorbed pressure and waited for the right moment to attack, a strategy that eventually worked.
The hosts broke the deadlock in the 78th minute when Tolu Arokodare outmuscled Virgil van Dijk and set up Rodrigo Gomez, who chipped the ball over Alisson for Wolves’ first shot on target.
According to Opta, this was the second-latest a team has scored with their first shot in a Premier League match, highlighting Wolves’ counter-attack efficiency.
Liverpool quickly equalized five minutes later when Mohamed Salah scored from a loose pass by Jean Ricner-Bellegarde.
It was Salah’s first Premier League goal since November 1, but his lack of impact, combined with Cody Gakpo accidentally blocking Curtis Jones’ shot, highlighted Liverpool’s ongoing struggles on the wings.
Even after spending nearly £450 million last summer, Liverpool may need major squad changes to fix creative gaps.
The absence of Florian Wirtz due to a back injury makes breaking down tight Premier League defenses even harder.
Despite this, Slot’s team had enough firepower to beat a side that had only won twice all season before this match.
Liverpool’s push for a late winner left them exposed at the back, allowing André to score from the edge of the box in the 94th minute.
The goal sent the home fans into ecstasy and manager Rob Edwards sprinting down the touchline.
That such celebrations have come so often this season highlights Liverpool’s inconsistent campaign.
Slot expressed his frustration after the match, noting that while Liverpool scores from set-pieces, they struggle to convert chances from open play.
Despite controlling the ball and creating more opportunities than their opponents, they failed to finish, summing up the season: “we scored one and they scored two and another one in injury time.”
The defeat leaves Liverpool in fifth, with a risk of dropping to sixth if Chelsea wins, hurting their Champions League hopes.
Slot called it “another setback” and admitted the team “didn’t help ourselves.”
He acknowledged they aren’t consistent enough to rely on luck, while crediting Wolves for their relentless effort and deserved good fortune.
