Kherson Under Fire: Deadly Russian Strikes Spark Ukrainian Retaliation

An intense escalation of air attacks has recently transpired between Russia and Ukraine, resulting in significant casualties and damage on both sides. Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia's Black Sea coastal city of Novorossiysk tragically killed two individuals, including an eight-year-old child, and injured eight others. This attack, which regional governor Venyamin Kondratyev described, also damaged 21 buildings in the port city, with social media showing blocks of flats with blown-out windows and charred cars.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Kyiv had executed a "unique operation" targeting the Novorossiysk naval base, which he referred to as the "last major stronghold of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea," located over 300 kilometres from the front line. Zelensky reported confirmed hits on air defence positions, piers, and seaport infrastructure, and shared a video depicting orange flashes of air defence and blue counter-drone laser beams, followed by a thick grey cloud over the city after dawn.

The Krasnodar region, a southern Russian area known for its tourist hotspots, also endured a barrage of "several hundred" Ukrainian drones. One person died in the village of Volna when drone debris fell into a private garden, and two others were wounded in the resort town of Gelendzhik on the Black Sea coast. In response, Russia's defence ministry claimed to have shot down 502 Ukrainian drones across its territory and the Black Sea overnight.

Conversely, Russian overnight strikes on the frontline city of Kherson in southern Ukraine killed two people, including a woman whose house was hit, and injured two others. Civilians in Kherson are frequently killed due to Russian troops being based on the opposite side of the Dnipro River. Ukraine's air force reported that Moscow launched attacks with missiles and 138 drones, of which 112 were successfully shot down or intercepted. These Russian attacks primarily targeted Ukraine's southern Odesa region and Sumy in the northeast.

Ukraine has stated that its increased strikes on Russian territory are a direct retribution for Moscow's daily bombardments of Ukrainian cities, which consistently force civilians into shelters and cause widespread casualties across the country, indicating a continuous cycle of retaliatory actions.
