Kenya Sets Stage for Tourism-Centric Jamhuri Day Celebration at Nyayo Stadium

Kenya’s 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations will spotlight tourism, wildlife, and culture, featuring immersive digital experiences and major policy announcements at Nyayo Stadium.

Kenya is gearing up for its 62nd Jamhuri Day national celebrations on Friday, December 12, at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi. The venue was confirmed following a full-dress rehearsal by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) on Monday, attended by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, who assured that preparations are in their final stages. The selection of Nyayo Stadium replaces the original plan to host the event at the under-construction Talanta Sports City.

This year’s celebrations adopt the government’s innovative themed approach, with 2025 spotlighting Tourism, Wildlife, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions). Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano revealed that President William Ruto is expected to unveil major new tourism policies during his national address, aimed at advancing the country’s global tourism profile. While specific policy details remain under wraps, CS Miano emphasized their transformative potential for the sector.

The reforms are part of the ongoing “Magical Kenya” brand refresh, initiated in September under the guidance of a 23-member Brand Kenya Task Force, chaired by Mary-Ann Musangi. The task force is benchmarking Kenya against leading global destinations to craft a modern, cohesive brand strategy aligned with Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). CS Miano noted that the refreshed brand aims to unify domestic and international marketing efforts under a singular national identity.

Adding a contemporary twist, Dennis Itumbi, Chair of the Thematic National Holidays Committee, announced that this year’s celebrations will be the most digitally immersive yet. Features include virtual reality experiences, a nationwide “National Bucket List” campaign encouraging citizen participation, youth-led storytelling initiatives, dynamic digital showcases, and extensive exhibitions. Two streets in Nairobi will also be dedicated to culture and tourism throughout the holiday week. As part of the campaign, President Ruto will reveal his personal travel bucket list, highlighting the government’s innovative approach to promoting national treasures.

The Jamhuri Day festivities coincide with Kenya Tourism, Wildlife, and MICE Week, running from December 8 to 12. Activities across all 47 counties include specialized exhibitions, conservation installations, innovation expos, film screenings, gastronomy festivals, excursions, and awards ceremonies. County CEC Members for Tourism have contributed proposals for parallel local activities, ensuring a nationwide celebration of tourism, conservation, innovation, and culture.

Friday’s central event at Nyayo Stadium is poised not only to commemorate Kenya’s independence but also to boldly spotlight the nation’s immense tourism and cultural wealth, inaugurating a new era of themed national holidays.
