Katsina Communities Rocked by Deadly Bandit Attacks, Police Officer Killed

Katsina State is grappling with a renewed wave of banditry, as recent coordinated attacks in Matazu Local Government Area have resulted in fatalities, injuries, and widespread destruction of public infrastructure. The escalating violence prompted Governor Dikko Umaru Radda to convene an emergency Security Council meeting to address the severe security concerns gripping the state.
Details emerging from various reports indicate that suspected armed bandits, operating in large numbers and heavily armed, launched multiple assaults. On a recent date, they initially blocked the Karadua–Musawa Road in Matazu Local Government Area, opening fire on an oncoming Volkswagen Golf vehicle and fatally shooting two persons. A joint team of operatives, including police, military, Katsina State Community Watch Corps, and local vigilantes, swiftly mobilized to the scene, dislodging the assailants and evacuating the victims to a nearby hospital.
Subsequently, the bandits regrouped and attempted to attack the Musawa Police Division. Officers on duty bravely repelled the assault, successfully foiling their attempt to overrun the facility and restoring normalcy to the immediate area. However, the encounter came at a tragic cost, as one police officer regrettably lost his life in the line of duty during the fierce confrontation.
Further coordinated attacks by the suspected bandits also targeted communities on a recent Sunday. In Sayaya town, attackers struck in the early hours, setting a primary healthcare centre ablaze and looting several shops before torching them. At least two vehicles were also destroyed in this assault. The gunmen then targeted a police facility within the area, where the aforementioned police officer was killed during an ambush. Two residents sustained injuries during these attacks and were transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. In a related development, Dankawari town in the same local government area was also hit, with a vehicle set ablaze, further intensifying fears among residents.
The state government, through the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dikko Radda, Ibrahim Mohammed, confirmed that attackers indeed hit multiple locations, including a health facility and commercial centres. Following the incidents, Governor Radda visited the affected communities, where he condoled with officers of the Nigeria Police Force over the death of their colleague and expressed his deepest sympathies to the families affected by the violence.
In response to the mounting tension and persistent threats, Governor Radda convened an emergency Security Council meeting at the Government House. The high-level gathering brought together a wide array of top security officials, underscoring the gravity and urgency of the situation. Attendees included senior officers of the Nigerian Army, officials from Defence Headquarters, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force, as well as representatives from the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Fire Service, and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Also participating were chairmen of affected local government areas, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other senior government officials. The ongoing meeting is focused on reviewing the current security landscape and exploring improved coordination among security agencies to effectively tackle the diverse threats across Katsina State. The Commissioner of Police, Ali Fage, has already deployed additional operational assets to the affected areas to strengthen security and prevent further attacks, and an investigation has commenced to apprehend the perpetrators.
These latest incidents underscore the persistent insecurity across Katsina State and the wider North-west region, where armed groups continue to target rural communities, security formations, and public infrastructure. Despite repeated military operations and government assurances, attacks in local government areas such as Matazu, Malumfashi, and Funtua have remained frequent, often involving killings, abductions, and the destruction of livelihoods. Residents in affected areas have consistently raised concerns over delayed response by security agencies, often forcing many communities to rely on self-help measures and local vigilante groups to protect themselves.
Authorities have assured the public that further developments regarding the investigation and security measures would be communicated in due course, as efforts intensify to restore lasting peace and security to the troubled region.
