Justin Timberlake Arrested for DUI Sparks Apology and Bodycam Dispute

Justin Timberlake has sued the ritzy Long Island town of Sag Harbor in an attempt to stop the public release of bodycam footage from his infamous drunk driving arrest.

According to court documents obtained by Page Six on Monday, the “SexyBack” singer wants an order from a Suffolk County Supreme Court judge to block the video’s release.

The recording, captured by officers during Timberlake’s traffic stop and arrest in June 2024, is currently part of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by members of the media, per the filing.

In court filings, Timberlake and his legal team argue that releasing the footage would violate his privacy and cause severe harm to his personal and professional reputation.

Attorney Michael Del Piano says the release would not serve the public and would violate Timberlake’s privacy.

The lawsuit names Timberlake as petitioner, and the Village of Sag Harbor, its police department, and Chief Robert Drake as respondents.

On June 18, 2024, at 12:17 a.m., Timberlake, driving a gray 2025 BMW with Florida plates, failed to stop at a stop sign and stay in his lane at Madison Street and Jermain Avenue.

Police noted his bloodshot eyes, strong alcohol odor, slowed speech, unsteady walking, and poor performance on field sobriety tests.

After initially pleading not guilty to a DUI, Timberlake agreed to a lesser, noncriminal charge of driving while ability impaired by alcohol.

On September 13, 2024, he was sentenced to 25 hours of community service, a $500 fine plus a $260 surcharge, a public safety announcement, and a 90-day New York State license suspension.

After his sentencing outside the Sag Harbor Municipal Building, Timberlake urged the public not to drink and drive, saying there are many alternatives like calling a friend, taking a taxi, or using ride apps.

He acknowledged his mistake and hoped others could learn from it.

Village officials told Timberlake’s attorney that they planned to release all eight hours of bodycam footage from the arrest, with some redactions for medical and security reasons.

Sag Harbor Mayor Thomas Gardella said the village will now wait for the court’s ruling, stressing that they are not hiding anything and are acting to protect public and village security.

Burke’s affidavit states that the footage shows the traffic stop, questioning, sobriety tests, and Timberlake’s arrest.

He warned that once released, digital copies can spread online indefinitely, causing immediate and irreversible harm such as stigma, harassment, reputational damage, and loss of privacy.
