James Gunn's 'Superman' Saga Expands: Big Names Join 'Man of Tomorrow' Cast!

Matthew Lillard has officially joined the expansive cast of “Superman: Man of Tomorrow,” the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster “Superman” film starring David Corenswet. While Lillard’s specific role remains undisclosed, his casting adds another intriguing layer to the ensemble. “Man of Tomorrow” is set to pick up after the events of the initial “Superman” movie, with the titular hero being compelled to collaborate with his nemesis, Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult. Their uneasy alliance is forged to combat an even greater and more menacing threat: the super-intelligent antagonist Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger.
The film boasts an impressive roster of talent, including Adria Arjona as the alien queen Maxima, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. Sara Sampaio will appear as Eve Teschmacher, while Isabela Merced takes on the role of Hawkgirl. The cast also features Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. Aaron Pierre, who also stars in the upcoming “Lanterns” series, will be reprising his role as John Stewart.
James Gunn is at the helm of “Man of Tomorrow,” serving as both writer and director for the project, which is currently in production. This marks a reunion for Lillard and Gunn, who previously collaborated over two decades ago on the live-action “Scooby-Doo” films (2002 and 2004), where Lillard portrayed Shaggy and Gunn was the screenwriter. Lillard had openly expressed his desire to join the DC Universe, joking last summer that he was “waiting” for an invitation from Gunn, suggesting his current role might be a manifestation of that long-held wish.
“Superman: Man of Tomorrow” is a key component of Warner Bros.' extensive efforts to relaunch the DC Universe. The first “Superman” film, featuring David Corenswet as Kal-El and Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, was a significant success, grossing over $600 million worldwide. This foundational film has set the stage for a new era of DC storytelling, with “Man of Tomorrow” scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
Beyond “Man of Tomorrow,” the DCU slate includes several other major projects launching soon. This summer, audiences will see the highly-anticipated
