Studio Shake-Up: DC and Warner Bros. Announce Major Release Date Reshuffles

Audiences awaiting the DC superhero film “Clayface” will experience a slight delay, as the movie's release date has been shifted from its original Sept. 11 slot to Oct. 23. This adjustment places the lesser-known Batman villain's standalone feature firmly in the autumn release schedule, allowing for strategic positioning within the crowded film landscape.
For those unfamiliar, “Clayface” delves into the story of a shapeshifting Batman adversary, with the film being described as a body horror genre, drawing comparisons to the works of Cronenberg. The project is helmed by director James Watkins, known for “Speak No Evil,” and features a screenplay crafted by Mike Flanagan of “Doctor Sleep” fame and Hossein Amini, recognized for “Drive.” The cast includes Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, an actor whose face becomes disfigured, and Naomie Ackie portraying the scientist he seeks assistance from.
The film boasts a robust production team, with DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran producing, alongside “The Batman” director Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. This production comes at a pivotal time for DC, following the critical and audience success of “Superman” last summer, which marked a significant upturn for the comic book studio after previous disappointments such as “The Flash” and “Black Adam,” films that predated Gunn and Safran’s leadership.
The rescheduling of “Clayface” has several implications for Warner Bros.' release calendar. Initially, the film was set to compete with a new adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility.” However, its move to Oct. 23 now places it in the slot vacated by another Warner Bros. title, “Remain,” which has been pushed to 2027. On its new premiere weekend, “Clayface” will face new competition from an untitled Jordan Peele project from Universal and the Rosamund Pike thriller “Wife and Dog.”
In a direct consequence of “Clayface” shifting its date, Warner Bros. has also opted to move the sequel to “Practical Magic” to Sept. 11. This witchy follow-up, directed by Susanne Bier, was originally slated for a Sept. 18 debut. The eagerly anticipated sequel will see the return of original stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, reprising their roles.
