Global Phenomenon: HBO Max's Supernatural Crime Series Dominates Streaming

Recognized as the "King of Horror" since the release of his 1974 bestseller, Carrie, Stephen King continues to see his acclaimed works adapted for various media. This enduring legacy is highlighted by the recent resurgence of his 2018 thriller, The Outsider, and the anticipation for Mike Flanagan's upcoming miniseries adaptation of Carrie.

The Outsider, which was adapted into a near-perfect HBO series two years after its publication, is currently experiencing a global resurgence on streaming charts. The series, which aired for ten episodes from January 12 to March 8, 2020, stars actors from House of the Dragon and MobLand. It unfolds in a small town in rural Georgia, commencing with the horrifying discovery of the mutilated body of 11-year-old Frankie Peterson, portrayed by Duncan E. Clark.

Collider's Tom Reimann lauded the miniseries as "one creepy-as-hell detective story that's equal parts True Detective and Dracula," praising its dark entertainment value and the strong performances delivered by Jason Bateman, Ben Mendelsohn, Mare Winningham, and Cynthia Erivo, the latter of whom reprises her role as Holly Gibney from King's Mr. Mercedes. Additional cast members include Bill Camp, Paddy Considine, Julianne Nicholson, Yul Vazquez, and Marc Menchaca.

Six years post its impressive initial run, The Outsider is making waves globally. On April 8, 2026, the Emmy-nominated crime drama ranked as the ninth most-watched show on HBO Max, propelled by subscribers across Mexico, Nicaragua, Argentina, and Peru, among other regions. Jason Bateman earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Terry Maitland, the accused Little League coach in Frankie Peterson's murder case. Currently, the show maintains a comfortable #11 spot worldwide on HBO Max.

Further exciting King fans is Mike Flanagan's forthcoming miniseries adaptation of Carrie, starring Summer H. Howell in the titular role. This new iteration follows three prior film adaptations released in 1976, 2002, and 2013, as well as a musical adaptation that debuted in 1988. As confirmed by series star Katee Sackhoff at a Fan Expo Vancouver panel on February 14, 2026, the Carrie miniseries is anticipated to premiere in October 2026. The supernatural horror series also features Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Joel Oulette, Matthew Lillard, and Samantha Sloyan.
