Hawks Star Nickeil Alexander-Walker Snags Coveted Most Improved Player Award!

Nickeil Alexander-Walker has been honored as this season's Most Improved Player, marking a significant achievement not only for himself but also for the Atlanta Hawks, as he becomes the second consecutive player from the team to receive the award. This historic win makes the Hawks the first franchise in the award's history to have two straight winners.

Alexander-Walker's remarkable improvement saw him average career-highs across multiple statistical categories. He recorded 20.8 points, 3.7 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game, alongside 1.3 steals. Furthermore, he achieved personal bests in blocks, field goal percentage, and 3-point field goal percentage. His scoring surged by an impressive 11.4 points, rising from an average of 9.4 points during his stint with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2024-25 season. This substantial increase ranks as the third-highest from one season to the next over the past 25 years, underscoring the magnitude of his progress.

Reflecting on the award, Alexander-Walker expressed deep emotion, stating, "It really validates my feelings." He articulated the struggle of feeling something internally that others might not yet recognize, finding validation in this award. "And it's kind of like that told you moment to not make you feel crazy," he added, revealing how the game sometimes made him feel delusional about his beliefs. The reality of his achievement had not fully set in, causing him to oscillate between moments of being on the verge of tears and wanting to scream with happiness.

The award also holds special meaning within his family, as he adds hardware to a collection that includes his cousin, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Oklahoma City MVP and Finals MVP. Alexander-Walker shared his pride in making his family proud and establishing his own identity: "When you're Shai's cousin, a lot of times you get referred to as Shai's cousin. And so now being recognized for being Nickeil Alexander-Walker feels great." He emphasized the strong bond with his cousin, calling Shai his "brother and my twin," and appreciating his unwavering support.

In his seventh NBA season, Alexander-Walker flourished with the Hawks. Early in the season, he revealed that despite having multiple suitors in free agency, he chose Atlanta after being recruited by then-Hawks point guard Trae Young. When Young suffered a knee injury and was subsequently traded to Washington, Alexander-Walker stepped up, playing a pivotal role in helping the Hawks maintain their playoff contention. During the 2025-26 season, he scored in double figures in 76 games and set a single-season franchise record with 251 3-pointers, which also ranked as the fourth most in the league.

Alexander-Walker attributed his success to the opportunity he was given and a determined mindset. "I think it was the opportunity that I was given and the mindset of just I have to make the most of it," he explained, describing his approach to seizing the moment: "When you get something like this, you got to grab it by the horns and just take it for the ride and just wherever it goes, I was hanging on for dear life, still am and still will be."
