For Corvette enthusiasts, 2026 marks a significant period with Chevrolet’s introduction of new high-performance variants. Following the earlier release of the powerful Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X, which boast 1,064 and 1,250 horsepower respectively, Chevrolet has now unveiled the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport and Corvette Grand Sport X. These newcomers are not only equipped with enhanced handling components but also coincide with the debut of a new V-8 engine, designated as the LS6. This new 6.7-liter V-8 engine represents the sixth generation of Chevy’s esteemed small-block eight-cylinder lineage, replacing the previous 6.2-liter LT2 V-8 found in the Corvette Stingray and E-Ray hybrid.
While the LS6 engine does not match the ZR1’s extreme power output, it delivers a substantial 535 horsepower in the standard Chevrolet Grand Sport. The Grand Sport X variant, which effectively takes the place of the 655-hp E-Ray, is a hybrid model that augments the LS6 with an electric motor powering the front axle. This sophisticated setup results in a formidable total system output of 721 horsepower.
To assess the real-world performance gains offered by these powertrain upgrades, both the Grand Sport and Grand Sport X underwent a comprehensive test session. The Grand Sport achieved a 0–60 mph time of 2.7 seconds, while the Grand Sport X, leveraging its hybrid power, rocketed to 60 mph in an astonishing 2.4 seconds. These figures highlight the significant performance capabilities of the new Corvette models.
Delving into the specifications, the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport features a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive, two-passenger, two-door internal combustion convertible layout. It is powered by the 6.7-liter port- and direct-injected OHV 16-valve V-8, producing 535 hp at 6,100 rpm and 520 lb-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm. It combines the 6.7-liter LS6 V-8 with a permanent-magnet motor (186 hp, 145 lb-ft), achieving a total system power of 721 hp. Its base price is $119,195, with the tested model at $146,470. It also uses an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for the V-8 and a 1-speed fixed ratio for the electric motor, powered by a 1.9-kWh NMC lithium-ion battery. The Grand Sport X has a curb weight of 3,928 lb (43/57% front/rear distribution) and is equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S ZP TPC tires (F: 275/30ZR20, R: 345/25ZR21).
The MotorTrend acceleration test results further underscore their performance. The Grand Sport accelerated from 0-30 mph in 1.0 seconds, 0-60 mph in 2.7 seconds, and completed the quarter-mile in 11.0 seconds at 122.0 mph. The Grand Sport X was even quicker, reaching 0-30 mph in 0.9 seconds, 0-60 mph in 2.4 seconds, and completing the quarter-mile in 10.4 seconds at 129.2 mph. Passing acceleration from 45-65 mph took 1.4 seconds for the Grand Sport and 1.1 seconds for the Grand Sport X.
Our 0–60 mph time for the Grand Sport actually surpassed Chevrolet’s own claim by 0.1 second. While the LS6’s increased power contributed significantly, the Corvette’s advanced launch control system played a crucial role. This system demonstrated admirable consistency in power delivery, a marked improvement from earlier C8 Corvette models. This performance favorably compares to the outgoing LT2 Corvette Stingray Z51, which recorded 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 11.1 seconds.
