Grant Shake-Up: Crucial SASSA Children's Grants See Major 2026 Changes

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced significant amendments to the Children’s Grants for August 2026, with payments diarised for Thursday, August 6, 2026. These updates primarily affect the Child Support Grant, which has seen an increase, alongside revised income eligibility requirements and improvements in application processing times. These grants are widely recognized for their role in minimizing child infant malnourishment in South Africa.

The SASSA Child Support Grant has increased to R580 per month, an uplift of R20 from the R560 paid in April 2026. In addition to payment adjustments, the Department of Social Development (DSD) has undergone leadership changes, with President Ramaphosa replacing Minister Sisisi Tolashe with Dina Pule. The long-term impact of this change on the grants system remains to be seen.

Income eligibility requirements for applicants have also been revised. Previously, a single caregiver could earn R5,100 per month and still qualify for the Child Support Grant; this limit has now increased to R5,800 per month. For married couples caring for a minor, the figure has risen from R10,200 to R11,600 per month. Annually, these limits equate to R69,600 for a single person and R139,200 for a couple. It is important to note that, unlike SASSA Old-Age Grants, there is no asset portion to the means test for Children's Grants.

In a positive development for beneficiaries, SASSA claims new maximum wait times of just 90 minutes at its offices. Thanks to the introduction of self-service kiosks equipped with Wi-Fi, beneficiaries can now complete eLife and biometric verification much faster. Furthermore, Child Support Grants can now be approved on the same day, a significant improvement from the previous waiting period of up to three months, provided all necessary documents are in order on the first visit.

Beyond the Child Support Grant, August 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants also include Foster Child and Care Dependency stipends. The Foster Child Grant, designated for court-appointed homes caring for foster children, increased by R40 in 2026, moving from R1,250 to R1,290. Foster parents are eligible to receive only one grant per child. The SASSA Care Dependency Grant, intended for mentally and/or physically disabled children under the age of 18, now pays R2,400, an increase of R80 from R2,320 in 2026. This amount is equivalent to the adult Disability Grant, and eligibility requires disability to be determined by a state-appointed doctor, officially acknowledged by SASSA.

This includes valid identity documents (IDs) and birth certificates for the applicant, child, and spouse (if married), proof of marital status, proof of income for both the applicant and spouse, a certified three-month bank statement (not older than three months), and proof of address (a utility statement with the applicant's name, not more than three months old). Failure to produce all correct documents and copies may result in being asked to return.
