Global Tensions Mount: Iran & US Clash Over Ceasefire Deal, Strait of Hormuz, and Nuclear Ambitions

Ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran have seen a flurry of diplomatic efforts and escalating threats, primarily centered around a proposed ceasefire and the critical Strait of Hormuz. On Monday, April 6, US President Donald Trump described a proposed 45-day ceasefire in the conflict as a “significant step” but reiterated that Tehran must not possess nuclear weapons. Speaking at the White House, Trump acknowledged ongoing negotiations through intermediaries, yet stressed that the proposal did not go far enough.
However, Iran formally rejected this ceasefire plan, communicating its position through Pakistan, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency. Tehran instead called for a permanent end to the war rather than a temporary truce. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated that negotiations could not align with ultimatums, violence, or threats of further military action. Iran’s response reportedly included a comprehensive 10-point framework proposing a broader regional de-escalation, guarantees for safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of sanctions, and commitments to post-war reconstruction. This initial ceasefire proposal had been put forward by mediators from Egypt, Pakistan, and Turkey.
Despite these diplomatic endeavors, President Trump issued a forceful ultimatum to Iran, warning of large-scale military action if the country failed to agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a specified deadline. He set this deadline for 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, April 7, (1 a.m. Wednesday UK time). Trump declared that Iran’s critical infrastructure, including power plants and “every bridge in Iran,” could be targeted and destroyed within hours, suggesting the country could be “taken out in one night.” He also claimed the US had achieved “total regime change” and that Iran had been “militarily defeated,” further suggesting the United States could impose control over the Strait of Hormuz, including charging tolls for its use, underscoring its strategic importance for global oil shipments. A US official noted that Trump had not formally approved the initial ceasefire proposal while military operations continued, describing it as one of several options under discussion. Trump defended his strong language regarding the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing its urgency.
In response to Trump’s remarks, Iranian military leadership warned that any continued or expanded attacks, particularly on civilian infrastructure, would be met with “devastating and widespread” retaliation across the Middle East. Tensions have intensified with reports of ongoing military activity, including strikes in Tehran and Iran’s missile launches targeting regional locations, including U.S. interests and allied territories. Israel has also been involved, conducting strikes on Iranian infrastructure, including energy facilities. The conflict’s complexity is further compounded by diplomatic efforts involving various actors, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir, who have reportedly attempted to broker a resolution.
A new proposal, informally referred to as the “Islamabad Accord,” has since emerged, also reportedly facilitated by Pakistan. This framework outlines a two-stage approach: an immediate ceasefire that would likely lead to the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, followed by a second phase focusing on negotiating a comprehensive agreement within 15 to 20 days. This deal is expected to be structured initially as a memorandum of understanding, with final agreements to be concluded through direct talks in Islamabad. The longer-term agreement would include commitments from Iran to limit its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief and access to frozen assets. While diplomatic efforts have intensified, Iran has yet to formally commit, with discussions ongoing and additional outreach from countries including Turkey and Egypt.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has also weighed in, insisting that any agreement to resolve tensions must guarantee free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that the vital waterway cannot be used as leverage in geopolitical disputes. A senior UAE official, Anwar Gargash, stressed that the security of the Strait, which handles roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments daily, must be treated as a global economic priority. While supporting an end to the conflict, Gargash warned that a ceasefire ignoring deeper issues like Iran’s nuclear ambitions and missile and drone capabilities could create a more dangerous Middle East. He noted the UAE is prepared to support international efforts, particularly U.S.-led ones, to secure shipping routes. The UAE has faced some of the heaviest attacks among Gulf nations, with Gargash warning that Iran’s actions could deepen security ties between Gulf states and Washington, further strengthening U.S. military presence and increasing Israel’s influence. The crisis highlights the need for long-term stability measures, as unresolved tensions could further destabilize the region and impact global energy security.
