Ghanaian MP Faces Justice: Parliament Vows No Shield for Asutifi North MP in NAIMOS Attack Scandal

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has vehemently condemned the alleged involvement of two Members of Parliament in an attack on officials from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), emphasizing that Parliament will not shield any MP found guilty of misconduct. The lawmakers implicated in the incident are Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, and Collins Dauda, MP for Asutifi South, who was reportedly “roped in” by Addo. Addressing the House, Speaker Bagbin expressed deep concern over the incident, particularly given that it involves individuals elected to uphold the law, not to undermine it. He stated, “The report of attacks on a team from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat, a task force established to combat illegal mining activities in the country, is most worrying.” He further condemned the attack in the strongest terms, despite awaiting a full briefing, and affirmed Parliament's unwavering commitment to accountability. To this end, he has instructed the Office of the Clerk and the Legal Services Office to provide comprehensive support to the Ghana Police Service in its investigations, adhering strictly to the 1992 Constitution, national laws, and the House's Standing Orders.
This condemnation by the Speaker arises amidst escalating public apprehension regarding political interference in Ghana's fight against illegal mining, locally known as “galamsey,” which continues to severely damage the nation’s environment and water bodies. Weighing in on the critical issue, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, urged his fellow parliamentarians to transcend partisan divides and present a united front against the galamsey menace. He stressed the importance of prioritizing national interests over electoral gains, warning against succumbing to lawlessness in pursuit of votes. “The issue of galamsey calls for action, collective, not an NDC-NPP affair, but a Ghana affair,” Afenyo-Markin stated, advocating for a focus on environmental protection and the nation's future.
In a significant development stemming from these allegations, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, the Asutifi North MP, has been arraigned after being accused of interfering with a NAIMOS anti-galamsey operation near Bronikrom–Hwediem in the Ahafo Region. The alleged obstruction occurred on Saturday, November 1, 2025, when a group of young people reportedly confronted a NAIMOS task force during an operation. The MP is alleged to have encouraged this confrontation, an accusation he has vehemently denied. Majority Leader Mr. Ayariga informed Parliament that Mr. Addo had been processed at the CID headquarters and subsequently taken to court for arraignment. He reiterated that Members of Parliament do not consider themselves above the law and are prepared to be held accountable. Mr. Addo's defense is that he attended the scene not to interfere but to help de-escalate tensions and ensure public order.
The arraignment of MP Ebenezer Kwaku Addo has been lauded by civil society groups as a crucial step towards accountability in the galamsey fight. Awula Serwah, Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, described it as “the right direction,” noting that it underscores a commitment to uphold the law and demand responsibility from public officials who allegedly interfere with security operations. She commended the authorities for pursuing the matter through lawful channels, which reinforces public confidence in the rule of law. Furthermore, Akwasi Konadu, Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Lands and Natural Resources Committee, has called for stringent action and accountability if it is proven that the MP incited the attack on NAIMOS personnel. Konadu branded the incident, which reportedly involved a mob forcibly disarming officers and freeing suspects, as “a blatant defiance” of state authority and a serious threat to law enforcement. He emphasized that Parliament must set an example and closely monitor investigations to ensure transparency, reminding that Speaker Bagbin had previously warned MPs involved in illegal mining could face severe legal consequences, including the potential loss of their parliamentary seat.
